Mō te tūnga | About the role

New Zealand Police delivers services that ensure communities are safe and feel secure, with less crime, road trauma and fewer victims. Police operates 24 hours a day in a complex environment actively preventing crime and crashes. With around 15,000 staff, we work from community-based police stations and large policing hubs, operate on land, sea and in the air, and respond to over 860,000 emergency calls every year.

The Performance and Data directorate is responsible for providing Police with the data and performance insights it needs to be successful. This means ensuring the availability of reliable and accurate information to internal and external stakeholders, and providing relevant, timely insights to enable informed decision-making in support of our goals and priorities.

As the Director of Performance and Data, you will lead and influence through a period of significant change, driving the adoption of a business partnering model, with a core focus of proactively providing quality performance insights to the organisation. You will be responsible for overseeing the collection, analysis, and utilisation of data to improve organisational performance, guide both operational and strategic decision-making, and foster a culture of continuous improvement. This leadership role requires someone with a passion for using performance information to prioritise operations, and who can build very strong and trusted relationships with senior stakeholders.

Police data and performance insights is of extremely high public interest, information the directorate provides is frequently referenced by Minister’s and used in media. Providing accurate, timely and useable information is critically important.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Relationships: Partner with internal business groups to develop a performance and data centre of excellence and business partnering model that provides stakeholders with the data-driven insights they require to be successful.
  • Collaboration: Work with external organisations to support Police data utilisation and ensure transparent reporting on key performance indicators.
  • Data & Strategy Leadership: Develop and implement evidence-led data reporting models, aligning them with Police’s goals and priorities.
  • Performance Systems Management: Oversee and maintain the data and performance management frameworks, ensuring the team has the hardware and software capabilities to succeed.
  • Team Leadership: Build and lead a high performing team, fostering innovation and ensuring a positive, high-performing work environment.
  • Health & Safety: Promote a safe working environment by integrating health, safety, and wellbeing into all aspects of team operations.

  • This role is based at Police National Headquarters, Wellington. Some travel may be required.

Utu ā-tau | Salary

This position is covered by a collective agreement and salary will commence between $203,400 and $210,180 dependent on skills and experience relevant to the role.
