Our vision: Nature is thriving in Aotearoa | Te Oranga o te Ao Tūroa
The Department of Conservation Te Papa Atawhai (DOC) serves to protect and restore nature spaces and species across Aotearoa.
Tangata whenua are inextricably linked to the whenua and te taiao, and we desire a future where whānau, hapū and iwi can thrive in their role as rangatira and kaitiaki.
Tō tātou taiāo. Tō tātou hītori. He tāonga tūturu nō Aotearoa. Maioha rawatia. Poipoia rawatia. Tukua.
Our nature. Our history. It's New Zealand's unique legacy. Enjoy it. Enrich it. Pass it on.

He angitūtanga | About the role
The Fast Track Approvals Bill will require DOC to provide advice to decision makers across a range of functions, and we are moving at pace to meet statutory timeframes. Most activities on public conservation land, or in relation to protected wildlife, marine mammals, or marine reserves require approval to ensure the activities are undertaken in a manner that protects the values of the land and complies with the legislation.
We are seeking a remarkable manager for a unique and newly created fixed term role to represent DOC interests and value. You'll be working with new legislative settings which have been created to assess projects qualified to grow and build the NZ economy.
You'll be leading and developing a team of trusted advisers who provide advice to expert panels of decision makers. The team are focussed on delivering within the framework of fast-paced consenting and assisting panels to navigate the complexity of concession legislation. To create an effective ‘one stop shop' that meets the Government's objectives, you'll work across DOC to get the required advice into the process.
This role will require you to be agile, comfortable in managing risk and uncertainty, and the ability to prioritise conservation values in a fast-paced, multi-application workload.

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience
We are looking for an experienced people leader to step into this role and quickly build the cross agency and internal relationships that will be critical for successful implementation and delivery. In addition, you will have:
  • Experience leading the implementation of legislation, policies and processes; in particular, consenting functions
  • Excellent communication, relationship and influencing skills, demonstrated through successful experience in cross agency/organisation collaboration
  • Experience analysing and synthesising information from a variety of sources and delivering in a clear and easily understood way for decision makers.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of Te ao Māori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Ngā āhuatanga kei a mātou | What's in it for you?
DOC places importance on developing a culture where everyone can participate, thrive, and grow. We're working towards being an organisation that is diverse, equitable and inclusive by default. You can learn more about what we offer here.
