Our dynamic School of Education/Te Kura Mātauranga (part of our Faculty of Culture and Society/Te Ara Kete Aronui) focuses on academic knowledge and providing our students with invaluable practical experience in teaching and education, through work placements in schools or education-related organisations. Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity
This critical senior academic leadership role enables the School to achieve excellence and equity in education and research, whilst supporting implementation of the University's strategic and operational goals. This position demands a visionary and experienced people leader who can inspire, innovate, and drive academic and industry excellence. With a focus on delivering a high-quality educational experience and fostering partnerships within the field, the successful candidate will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the school. The Head of School is a key member of the Dean's Leadership Team.
Key focus areas include:
- Provide leadership and direction for the School of Education.
- Continue to develop and implement academic programs that meet industry standards and student needs.
- Continue to foster strong relationships with industry partners and stakeholders to ensure curriculum relevance and career opportunities.
- Lead, mentor, and motivate academic and administrative staff to achieve school objectives.
- Oversee budgeting, resource allocation, and efficient school operations.
- Uphold the school's policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with educational regulations and standards.
- Act as the primary liaison between the school and external entities, promoting effective communication and positive relationships.

Along with your academic CV (with full publication list), please ensure to submit a) a cover letter which explains why this role and AUT are of interest, and b) a statement addressing how your experience aligns with the key selection criteria we're seeking below:
- A record of academic achievement suitable for appointment as an associate professor or professor, with discipline expertise in one (or more) of the discipline areas within our School of Education.
- Working knowledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and experience of the New Zealand education sector.
- Significant staff management experience leading a school or sizeable academic department. Please outline the size/scale of staff led, along with successes developing and sustaining growth and ensuring a positive work culture for staff.
- Demonstrated development of significant industry connections and partnerships.
- Significant experience leading strategic change demonstrating excellent understanding of cultural, operational, and organisational change management.

- Start Date: Late-2024/Early-2025 (to be agreed with the successful candidate).
- Term: The successful candidate will secure a 5-year term.
- Salary: Aligned with the appropriate step in AUT's academic pay scales (Associate Professor NZD $142, 835 - $165,369; Professor range: NZD $156,354 - $201,425). In addition, an annual allowance is paid for Head of School responsibilities.
