Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role
Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting Kaiārahi ā-kāinga rua - Residential Advisers on a fixed-time, part-time basis. The Directorate of Student and Campus Living actively engages with, supports, mentors, and inspires our students, and provides them with a distinctively 'Te Herenga Waka’ experience.
Living in the hall and reporting to the Tumuaki Taupuni - Head of Hall, Kaiārahi ā-kāinga rua - Residential Advisers (RAs) work closely with hall staff and the RA team to support, create, and maintain a welcoming and respectful hall community.
RAs are required to be committed for the full academic year and gain experience working in a rewarding environment with a diverse range of students. RAs become a leader in the hall community, helping to connect students to the university student services. The RA teams, with support from management, plan and deliver engaging activities in the hall to help students meet new friends, succeed in their studies, and feel at home.
RAs work approximately 30 hours per fortnight, consisting mainly of evening and weekend shifts. All successful applicants are required to complete a comprehensive training, starting mid-January. During the three-week training period you are required to be available to work 40 hours a week.
There are a number of roles available across all of our first year Halls, you will be asked your preference of first year hall throughout the application process.
Ō pūmanawa - About you
You will be able to demonstrate actively engaging with others in the University and wider community. Your ability to relate well to a wide range of people, staying calm under pressure, and having a positive attitude will have you widely respected.
An RA is also a student so you must be ready to balance the RA role and your classes, assessments, and exams.
We’re looking for someone who:
  • Will be a third-year student or higher, or an exceptional second-year student.
  • Is willing to live on-site and be an active member of the hall community.
  • Is an experienced community builder, and is committed to fostering a vibrant, safe, and supportive community.
  • You will have experience working across cultures, including Māori and Pasifika, and can engage and communicate well with a diverse range of students.
  • Can work approximately 30 hours a fortnight on a roster, mainly evening and weekend shifts (some weeks will be more involved than others).
  • During the three-week compulsory training staring in January, RAs will be required to work 40 hours per week.
  • Is happy to complete a range of basic administrative and cleaning tasks when requested.
  • Enjoys living with lots of people, and coping with the vibrancy and busyness that comes with living in a large community.
  • Truly enjoys meeting and approaching new people, making them feel at ease, and can connect others.
