Are you passionate about te taiao, and keen to be at the leading edge of iwi partnership and conservation leadership in Tāmaki Makaurau?
Play a vital, key role in redeveloping the way we deliver our Treaty obligations – an opportunity to make these more meaningful.
As Kaitohu Matua Treaty Partner Relationships, you will take a lead role on delivery of key work related to Treaty commitments across the rohe. You will collaborate with Treaty Partners at both iwi and hapu level to co-design, implement and deliver on exciting projects and kaupapa at place. You will play a strategic role in the wider team working alongside your peers to ensure our treaty partner is a priority and remains at the forefront for delivery, including Treaty settlement obligations.
You will focus on:
- Identifying gaps in Treaty settlement implementation obligations across the districts and work with the operations teams to plan for and remedy the gaps.
- Scope work arising from new Treaty settlements, and work with the management team to operationalise conservation and commercial opportunities for Iwi.
- Coordinate legal input to interpret settlement documents and ensure implementation plans fulfil the intent of Settlements.
- Facilitate coordination of annual business planning meetings with Treaty partners.
- Support coordination of regular meetings with Treaty partners to develop, review and amend implementation of relevant agreements, charters, and protocols.
- Scope, plan, manage and deliver specific agreed initiatives.
- Support relevant managers, director, and other staff with the strategic collaboration meetings with our Treaty partners.
- Support opportunities for whānau, hapū, and iwi to build their internal capabilities to practice their responsibilities as kaitiaki.
- Support the Operational Leadership Team to develop a regional framework to identify and implement DOC's obligations to Post Settlement Governance Entities (PSGEs).
- Keep up to date with the local iwi landscape and ensure this information is shared with operations.
- Willingness to go the extra mile for whānau, and be able to engage with DOC staff, proccesses and procedures.

The Regional Treaty Partnership Team is a new team within Tāmaki Makaurau that is responsible for the oversight of the delivery of treaty settlement commitments across the rohe for Te Papa Atawhai. The team works closely together to build more meaningful relationships with iwi in Tāmaki Makaurau and develop plans to implement treaty settlement legislation and treaty partner aspirations.
The Tāmaki Makaurau District stretches from Waiuku and Hunua in the south to Te Arai in the north and covers the east and west coasts. The work of the team covers everything Te Papa Atawhai manages locally and is diverse, including working with threatened species, wild animal control, maintaining visitor and heritage sites, managing statutory work on behalf of the region, and working with community groups and others on conservation projects. The team also leads the nationally significant tara iti New Zealand Fairy Tern recovery programme.
The district also leads relationships on behalf of the region for eight of the 19 iwi in the region. Two roles will support the operations manager and district team members to deliver on treaty settlement commitments, understand and support iwi aspirations in the conservation space, and, where relevant, support the wider team to improve their understanding of Te Ao Māori.
