Kaitohutohu Matua | Senior Advisor - Kaitohutohu |Advisor, Upholding Treaty Settlements

Join our team as a Senior Advisor / Advisor in the the Upholding Treaty Settlements team. In these roles you will be in a team providing expert advice and assistance in relation to Treaty settlements and other Treaty-related agreements, including Takutai Moana arrangements. Your role will be pivotal in ensuring that these settlements and agreements are upheld through comprehensive policy development and implementation.

This includes:
  • Supporting policy teams across the organisation to understand the implications policy development has for Treaty settlements, and to work through how settlements can be upheld.
  • Where needed, embedding in policy teams to provide a settlements lens across the policy work programme.
  • Developing policy advice for Ministers around how to uphold settlements and other arrangements within wider policy decision-making.
  • Working alongside the Treaty-based relationships team to ensure that post-settlement governance entities (PSGEs) and other groups views on upholding settlements are considered in the policy process.
  • Working alongside other agencies on complex policy matters relating to the upholding of settlements and other arrangements.

Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako | Skills and experience

  • Proven experience in writing high-quality briefing papers or other material to support Ministers / senior-leaders, including coordinating and working through feedback from different sources.
  • In-depth knowledge of:
  • Te Tiriti o Waitangi;
  • Treaty settlements and other arrangements, the Treaty settlement process, and the historical context of settlements;
  • Māori rights and interests;
  • the Māori Crown relationship context.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply knowledge of Treaty settlements and related agreements into the policy development process – understanding how policy development interacts and impacts on settlements and other arrangements and working through solutions to ensure those arrangements are upheld.
  • A strong understanding of the machinery of government and experience in policy development, along with excellent written and oral communication skills, and well-developed policy analysis skills.
  • Ability to liaise and collaborate with Treaty partners, and other policy and subject matter experts.
  • Experience or expertise in any of the following would be beneficial:
  • climate change or adaptation policy;
  • RMA or regulatory policy;
  • Takutai Moana.
Whānuitanga Utu ā-Tau | Salary range

Salary range for this role is from:
Senior Advisor: $108,976 to $132,277 p/a.
Advisor: $79,598 to $96,372 p/a.
Appointment within this range will be based on skills and experience.
