Senior Rural Advisor - Land for Life Engagement

Land for Life (L4L) is an innovative collaboration between the Ministry for Primary Industries, Hawke's Bay Regional Council, and The Nature Conservancy Aotearoa New Zealand. This transformative public-private partnership is focused on helping farmers build resilient, sustainable, and profitable farming systems while protecting our precious environment.
The role of Senior Rural Advisor – Land for Life Engagement is to facilitate farmer engagement for the project. Key areas of focus will be engagement with catchment groups, growing the pipeline of landowners to participate in the L4L project and coordinate the end to end engagement with landowners. The person appointed to this role will do this by collaborating with and supporting rural advisors, catchment advisors and the wider HBRC Catchment Team. They also work with internal and external agencies on communications, extension, and other delivery functions to support L4L.
As our Senior Rural Advisor for Land for Life Engagement, you'll be at the forefront of driving positive change in our rural communities. You will work closely with farmers, catchment groups, and industry partners to implement sustainable land management practices and support the transition to more regenerative farming systems. This role offers the chance to make a real difference in how we approach farming in Hawke's Bay, combining environmental stewardship with agricultural prosperity.

To be successful in this role, you will need:
  • You hold a relevant Bachelor's degree or equivalent tertiary qualification, or be able to demonstrate experience and knowledge from previous roles.
  • You bring at least 3 years' experience in sustainable forestry management or providing primary sector and farming system technical advice
  • You're well-versed in farm planning concepts and have a strong understanding of various farming systems
  • You have a proven track record of independently leading engagement within rural communities, including working with Tāngata Whenua
  • You possess excellent project management skills and are comfortable managing budgets and reporting
  • You're experienced with farm planning, spatial planning/mapping tools or other farm and management tools.
  • You have sound commercial understanding and experience with farm finances and management
  • You're a natural relationship builder with excellent interpersonal skills
  • You bring an understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and value incorporating Te Reo Māori in practical ways
  • You're adaptable, innovative, and capable of working independently
  • You hold a valid driver's license and are willing to travel within the region
What we offer | Nga huanga mōu:
The salary range for this role is between $91,890 to $102,100 and will depend on the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. This is a high-performing and motivated team of professionals that you will be joining, offering an opportunity to experience working within local government and supporting the recovery work from Cyclone Gabrielle.
