PhD Fellow in Human factors in remotely operated and autonomous maritime vessels

The position
A Ph D position is available at the Department of Technology and Safety (ITS), Ui T The Arctic University of Norway for candidates interested in the human factors associated with remotely operated and autonomous maritime vessels. This position offers the opportunity for a candidate to pursue a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph D) in this rapidly advancing domain.
ITS is organized under the Faculty of Science and Technology and is located at three campuses: Tromsø, Bardufoss and Harstad. The department has approximately 90 employees and approximately 500 students. It offers undergraduate, master, and Ph D programs as well as research in the areas of nautical science, aviation, societal safety, environment, and international preparedness.
The position is for a period of three years. The objective of the position is to complete research training to the level of a doctoral degree. Admission to the Ph D programme is a prerequisite for employment, and the programme period starts on commencement of the position. The candidate, once employed, is required to obtain admission into the National Joint Ph D Program in Nautical Operations, and complete all the necessary components and requirements to obtain a Ph D degree.
The workplace is at Ui T in Tromsø. You must be able to start in the position within a reasonable time after receiving the offer.
The position’s field of research
This Ph D position is funded by the Research Council of Norway (RCN) through the research project titled “Reframing Education and Competence Model for Remote Maritime Operations (REFRAME)”. The project explores the effects of digitalization and remotely controlled ship operations on maritime competence. It also aims to assess emerging skill needs, define aligned training paradigms, and conceptualize pedagogical frameworks tailored to meet the evolving competence prerequisites engendered by advancements in remote and autonomous maritime operations.
As a Ph D candidate on this research project, you are expected to conduct research aligned with the project’s objectives and tasks. This could involve investigating Human-Machine Interaction (HMI), examining the implications of high-degree autonomy in maritime operations, and analyzing the evolving roles and skill prerequisites for maritime professionals within the context of remotely controlled autonomous ships. The candidate, as a part of the project team, is expected to collaborate on research design, data collection and analysis, co-author scientific papers, and represent the project at relevant conferences and workshops.
The applicants must present a description outlining the academic basis of the Ph D project. The project description shall not exceed 5 pages, literature references included. It must include a description of the topic, research question(s) and a reasoning of the choices. It should also indicate the methodologies to be used. The final project description will be developed in cooperation with the supervisor.

Qualifications
This position requires a master’s degree or equivalent in one of the following fields:
  • Master’s degree in maritime operations, nautical science, or a related maritime field
  • Master’s degree in human factors, ergonomics, cognitive psychology, or a related human factors field
Essential qualification requirements include:
  • Knowledge of maritime operation and bridge equipment
  • Effective written and verbal communication abilities
  • Capability to communicate and work effectively within a multicultural team
  • Candidates should typically have a grade of B or better for their master’s degree and thesis. Those with lower grades may be considered if they demonstrate particular suitability for Ph D education
Applicants must document fluency of in English and be able to work in an international environment. Nordic applicants can document their English capabilities by attaching their high school diploma. Working knowledge of Norwegian or a Scandinavian language is also beneficial.
In addition, it would be advantageous for the candidate to possess navigation experience, preferably accompanied by deck officer Certificate of Competency (Co C), as this competence can be highly beneficial for comprehending the human factor challenges involved in maritime navigation and operations.

In the assessment, the emphasis is on the applicant's estimated academic and technical abilities to complete the Ph D project within the given timeframe and contribute to the objectives and tasks of the REFRAME project. The project description will also be considered. In addition, other experience of significance for the completion of the doctoral programme may be given consideration.
As many people as possible should have the opportunity to undertake organized research training. If you already hold a Ph D or have equivalent competence, we will not appoint you to this position.
Admission to the Ph D programme
For employment in the Ph D position, you must be qualified for admission to the Ph D programme National Joint Ph D Program in Nautical Operations and participate in organized doctoral studies within the employment period.
Admission normally requires:
  • A bachelor's degree of 180 ECTS and a relevant master's degree, or an integrated master's degree.
Ui T normally accepts higher education from countries that are part of the Lisbon Recognition Convention.
A weighted grade average for the master's degree equal to B or better is normally required for admission. The candidate must also have a grade of B or better on the master's thesis. Exceptions to these admission rules can be considered if the candidate can document particular suitability for a Ph D education.

Applicants with a foreign education will be subjected to an evaluation of whether the educational background is equal to Norwegian higher education, following national guidelines from NOKUT. Depending on which country the education is from, one or two additional years of university education may be required to fulfil admission requirements, e.g. a 4-year bachelor's degree and a master's degree.
If you are employed in the position, you will be provisionally admitted to the Ph D program. Application for final admission must be submitted no later than three months after taking up the position.

Remuneration for the position of Ph D Fellow is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1017. A compulsory contribution of 2 % to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted. A shorter period of appointment may be decided when the Ph D Fellow has already completed parts of their research training programme or when the appointment is based on a previous qualifying position Ph D Fellow, research assistant, or the like in such a way that the total time used for research training amounts to three years.
