PhD Fellow in Human factors in remotely operated and autonomous maritime vessels

ITS is organized under the Faculty of Science and Technology and is located at three campuses: Tromsø, Bardufoss and Harstad. The department has approximately 90 employees and approximately 500 students. It offers undergraduate, master, and Ph D programs as well as research in the areas of nautical science, aviation, societal safety, environment, and international preparedness.
The position is for a period of three years. The objective of the position is to complete research training to the level of a doctoral degree. Admission to the Ph D programme is a prerequisite for employment, and the programme period starts on commencement of the position. The candidate, once employed, is required to obtain admission into the National Joint Ph D Program in Nautical Operations, and complete all the necessary components and requirements to obtain a Ph D degree.
The workplace is at Ui T in Tromsø. You must be able to start in the position within a reasonable time after receiving the offer.
As a Ph D candidate on this research project, you are expected to conduct research aligned with the project’s objectives and tasks. This could involve investigating Human-Machine Interaction (HMI), examining the implications of high-degree autonomy in maritime operations, and analyzing the evolving roles and skill prerequisites for maritime professionals within the context of remotely controlled autonomous ships. The candidate, as a part of the project team, is expected to collaborate on research design, data collection and analysis, co-author scientific papers, and represent the project at relevant conferences and workshops.

- Master’s degree in maritime operations, nautical science, or a related maritime field
- Master’s degree in human factors, ergonomics, cognitive psychology, or a related human factors field
- Knowledge of maritime operation and bridge equipment
- Effective written and verbal communication abilities
- Capability to communicate and work effectively within a multicultural team
- Candidates should typically have a grade of B or better for their master’s degree and thesis. Those with lower grades may be considered if they demonstrate particular suitability for Ph D education
In addition, it would be advantageous for the candidate to possess navigation experience, preferably accompanied by deck officer Certificate of Competency (Co C), as this competence can be highly beneficial for comprehending the human factor challenges involved in maritime navigation and operations.

As many people as possible should have the opportunity to undertake organized research training. If you already hold a Ph D or have equivalent competence, we will not appoint you to this position.
Admission normally requires:
- A bachelor's degree of 180 ECTS and a relevant master's degree, or an integrated master's degree.

Applicants with a foreign education will be subjected to an evaluation of whether the educational background is equal to Norwegian higher education, following national guidelines from NOKUT. Depending on which country the education is from, one or two additional years of university education may be required to fulfil admission requirements, e.g. a 4-year bachelor's degree and a master's degree.
If you are employed in the position, you will be provisionally admitted to the Ph D program. Application for final admission must be submitted no later than three months after taking up the position.

Remuneration for the position of Ph D Fellow is in accordance with the State salary scale code 1017. A compulsory contribution of 2 % to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund will be deducted.
