Ph D Research Fellow in Geodynamics and Surface Processes: 3D response of active rift evolution to surface processes, the Corinth Rift system, Greece
There is a vacancy for a Ph D Research Fellow in in Geodynamics and Surface Processes: 3D response of active rift evolution to surface processes, the Corinth Rift system, Greece at the Department of Earth Sciences, University of Bergen. The position is for a fixed-term period of 3 years with the possibility of a 4 th year with compulsory other work (e.g. teaching duties at the Department). The EU-funded Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network for Climate-Tectonics Interactions (INITIATE, https://www.initiate-dn.eu/) comprises thirteen Ph D projects. INITIATE focuses on training early-career researchers to understand how climate and tectonics interact across various spatial and temporal scales. The goal is to develop solutions for georesources (natural gas, geothermal, water), sub-surface storage (hydrogen, carbon, and nuclear waste), and geohazards (landslides, debris flows, and active faulting). The program collaborates with 9 European Institutes, Academic partners, and 7 Companies actively involved in sustainable georesources, geohazards, and the environment. Additionally, entrepreneurial skills are integrated into the training program to prepare doctoral candidates for careers in industry or academia. Each doctoral candidate is linked to a second academic partner to complement and broaden their scientific training and to a dedicated industry partner to acquire industry-relevant skills.
As part of the INITIATE Doctoral Network, the successful applicants will take part in regular workshops and summer schools (e.g., Bergen, Potsdam, Spain, Greece, Argentina) organized by the European network partners.
About the project/work tasks:
3D response of active rift evolution to surface processes:
the Corinth Rift system, Greece This Ph D project aims to quantify and model the 3D response of active rift evolution to surface processes in the Corinth Rift system. The currently active Corinth Rift is one of the best documented rift systems on Earth with high resolution mapping of both onshore and offshore fault and basin structure constraining its evolution. The rift system localizes deformation in the Gulf of Corinth with earlier rift faults onshore towards the south. However, it is unclear what controls the migration of rift faults in time space and progressive localisation of deformation. Main objectives of this project are to understand how progressive shifting of depocenters towards the present Gulf feedbacks into rift fault formation and migration and how inheritance and surface processes control 3D rift fault growth, linkage, and stratigraphic architecture. We will use the existing high-resolution data base on the tectono-stratigraphic evolution of the Corinth Rift to constrain coupled 3D forward tectonic surface process models of an actively evolving rift (Years 1 and 2). We will in particular test how the evolving 3D extensional fault network is affected by short and longer-term changes in climate driven erosional efficiency associated erosion of uplifted footwall scarps and short and long-range sediment export (Year 2). The DC will as well use insights into the Corinth Rift basin as an analogue for subsurface data on the N Sea Rift (Year 3).
The bulk of the work will be carried out at Ui B Bergen, with collaborative work at Univ. of Toulouse (France) and at EQUINOR (Norway).
Qualifications and personal qualities:
  • The applicants must hold a master's degree or equivalent education in Tectonics/Geodynamics/Geophysics, or must have submitted his/her master's thesis for 2 Sist oppdatert 31.3.2020 assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the master's degree has been awarded.
  • Background and research interest in quantitative earth science is required.
  • Training in either numerical model use and development or in a quantitative approach to geological data handling is a requirement.
  • Documented basic programming skills in for instance Python, Matlab or another programming language is required.
  • Experience with geodynamic is an advantage.
  • Experience with landscape evolution modelling is an advantage.
  • Experience with the tectonics of rift systems is an advantage.
