Job Overview

British Council Korea is recruiting an experienced, enthusiastic, dedicated Young Learner teacher to join our teaching team. We are keen to appoint staff who can demonstrate good professional skills, are willing and able to learn and develop, and are good members of a team. The ideal candidate will be comfortable teaching multiple age groups from 4 years old to 17 years old and a wide range of levels from beginner to proficient. Experience teaching phonics and literacy is also desirable.

Accountabilities

Support the British Council’s global English strategy by

  • Delivering teaching to the highest standards of ELT to a range of Young Learners (ages and levels)
  • Enhancing British Council’s reputation as a world authority in ELT
  • Continuing professional development and sharing of best practices.
  • Ensuring teaching is engaging, relevant and appropriately challenging, and meets learner needs and expectations
  • Using a variety of resources and technologies to meet learner needs and ensuring teaching meets Teaching Quality standards and organisational expectations
  • Supporting the teaching centre’s activities and British Council plans


Qualifications

Essentials

  • University degree ( in any discipline)
  • TEFL-I qualification (CELTA or Trinity Certificate TESOL)


Desirables

  • Cambridge DELTA or Trinity Diploma
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Education in primary, secondary, or equivalent
  • Certificate in English Language Teaching to Young Learners (CELTYL) or Teaching Young Learners Extension Certificate (TYLEC)


Work Experience

Essential

  • 2 years post-certificate i.e. CELTA or Trinity Certificate TESOL experience in two or more of the following age groups:
    • Young learners aged 4 to 6 (400+ hours)
    • Young learners aged 7 to 11 (800+ hours)
    • Young learners aged 12 to 14 (400+ hours)
    • Young learners aged 15 to 17 (400+ hours)


Desirable

  • Experience teaching phonics and literacy

Language Requirement

  • High proficiency in English i.e. full mastery of English across all 4 skills equivalent to user (CEFR C2) IELTS. Band 9 in each of 4 sections of the academic module

Salary & Benefits

  • Package: KRW 3,493,148 - KRW 4,123,233 depending on qualifications and experience. This includes KRW 1,000,000 (one million Korean won) per month housing allowance.
  • Housing: The British Council Korea will provide support for a security deposit, i.e. key money, in advance. The key money will be paid up to the amount of KRW 10,000,000 (ten million Korean won) for a single lease. The key money is paid by the British Council to the lessor on the employee’s behalf and is returned to the British Council upon expiry of the lease.
  • Annual Leave: Annual paid leave is 35 days. In addition, there are 14 public holidays per year.
  • Medical Allowances: All British Council teachers are registered with Allianz Partners, the designated British Council insurer, to receive medical cover for themselves and their dependents. The teacher is responsible for an annual deductible of £150 for everyone who makes a claim
  • Settling-in allowance :(if you are recruited from outside Korea) Teachers are given a settling-in allowance of two weeks' salary for a single teacher and three weeks' for a teacher with a partner/ a spouse/ dependents. You will also receive up to two weeks' hotel accommodation/quarantine and subsistence on first arrival.
  • Baggage allowance :(if you are recruited from outside Korea) Teachers are eligible for an accountable baggage allowance of £1,200 for single teachers; £2,000 for staff with accompanying partner and/or children.
  • Travel Allowance: (if you are recruited from outside Korea)- The British Council will pay economy class air fares from London to Seoul at the start of contract (for staff recruited from the UK) and Seoul to London at the end of the successful completion of the contract. The British Council will also pay for the same incoming and outgoing air fare for spouse, partner, and/or children recognised via the Family Certificate and Partner Declaration Form.


Additional Information

  • Contract Duration: 24 Months
  • Renewable Period: 1 Year
  • Contract Hours: 38 Per week
  • Contract Teaching Hours: 24 +2 substitution
  • Tentative start date: January 2024
  • Work schedule: All branches are open 7 days a week. From Monday to Friday, the earliest weekday classes start at 1:00 pm and the last ones finish at 7:40 pm with weekend classes starting at 9:30 am and the last ones finishing at 6:45 pm. You will work five days per week, with two consecutive days off. During the two intensive periods in the summer and the start of the calendar year, classes currently run from 10.00 am until 5.00 pm from Monday to Friday, with a Sat/Sun weekend. This may be subject to change in the future.
  • Local restrictions on employment: For immigration and registration purposes, new teachers applying for a visa must
    • Hold a passport from an English-speaking country as defined by Korean immigration services: UK, Ireland, US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa.
    • Candidates with an F-visa, of any nationality, can apply for this post if they have a university degree from one of the above-mentioned countries.
    • Provide an original undergraduate degree/MA certificate from one of the abovementioned English-speaking countries
    • Obtain an apostilled/verified criminal record check from the country of nationality
    • Provide requested documentation to obtain local police checks from previous countries of employment, reference checks, employment checks and qualification checks over the past 10 years.
    • Pass a medical check-up in Korea, including an HIV and drugs test
