Role title: Development and Communications Manager
FTE: 21 hours per week (0.6FTE)
Permanent or fixed term: Fixed term until 30th June 2025, with the possibility of extension.
Salary: £21,000 (£35,000 pro-rata)
Location of work: OUS main offices in Central Oxford, with some home working.
Reports to: Bursar
Direct reports: Development Administrator
Working with the Bursar, the Development and Communications Manager will be responsible for the development and delivery of the Union’s fundraising and communications strategies, with focus on improving member and audience engagement with the Society and building a sustainable pipeline of income from individual giving, legacies and grants.
We are looking for someone who has demonstrable experience of managing fundraising activities and securing gifts of six figures and above from a range of sources. You will have experience in developing and implementing engaging communications plans for diverse audiences across a range of media and platforms.
1. Fundraising Strategy
1.1. To work with the Bursar and the Development Administrator to develop and implement a strategy that addresses a diverse range of income sources.
1.2. To provide regular reporting as required to the Development Committee on performance against performance indicators.
2. Fundraising administration
2.1. To manage and support the Development Administrator to ensure the Society’s website, alumni and fundraising databases are used effectively and in compliance with relevant legislation to provide a positive user experience.
2.2. To be responsible for managing the organisation’s registration, compliance and ongoing reporting to the Fundraising Regulator, and the Code of Practice.
3. Management of Donors and supporters
3.1. To develop and maintain key relationships with supporters and funders promoting the aims and objectives of the Society.
3.2. Organise and host on site events to inform, engage and maintain relationship with the giving community.
3.3. Develop fundraising and publicity materials to engage current and future givers.
3.4. Ensure the Union provides appropriate and accurate donor recognition.
4. Marketing & Communications
4.1. To work with the Bursar and the student committees to develop and implement an engaging and effective communications strategy for the society.
4.2. To manage the Union’s website, overseeing its maintenance and development as an engagement tool.
4.3. Work with the student committee to manage the Society’s social media channels to provide a positive and engaging impression of the Society.
4.4. To work with relevant internal stakeholders to support the Society’s efforts to grow its commercial income portfolio.
5. Financial management
5.1. To manage the annual fundraising plan and budget.
5.2. Prepare financial and analytical reports for as required.
5.3. To consistently focus effort on the most appropriate fundraising activities with the highest chance of success.
6. General
6.1. Champion the mission, vision and values of the Oxford Union Society internally and externally.
6.2. Ensure the Society’s compliance with all relevant legislation.
6.3. Undertake other reasonable duties as requested by the Bursar.
The role will require evening and weekend working and may involve travel across the United Kingdom, and occasional international travel to meet the needs of the organisation.
Person Specification
Essential skills and experience
· Significant fundraising experience including planning and delivering successful online fundraising campaigns.
· A track record of securing donations from individuals.
· Experience of donor stewardship.
· Excellent presentation, writing and storytelling skills across a wide range of applications and for varied audiences.
· Excellent proofreading and editing skills.
· Understanding of organisational branding.
· Experience managing websites and social media platforms.
· Excellent organisational skills with the ability to work under pressure and to strict deadlines.
· Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build and maintain positive relationships.
Personal Attributes
· Enthusiasm for the Society’s purpose and commitment to its charitable purpose.
· Confidence and the ability to work effectively with people from diverse global backgrounds.
· Highly self-motivated and able to work on own initiative as well as part of a team.
· Enthusiastic and positive attitude to work with a willingness to learn new skills and support colleagues as needed.
Desirable
· Experience using a Customer Relationship Management System (CRM) to manage donor relationships
· Experience using Content Management Systems (CMS) to maintain websites, and experience of sing Google Analytics to assess performance.
· Experience managing Google Ad Grant campaigns.
· Experience working remotely.
· Experience working with volunteers.
· Experience working as part of a small team.
