Lead Theatre Practitioner/Sister/Charge Nurse

The post holder will be leading a team in a specialist clinical area (Scrub, Recovery or Anaesthesia) and will be responsible for providing clinical management, advice, support, and teaching to the highest possible standard to all relevant personnel within the peri operative environment. Monitor the development, implementation, and evaluation of programmes of care and promoting best evidence-based practice.

The post holder will have responsibility for the operational management of staff and resources, taking a lead in a specific aspect of operational management in the Theatre setting. To maintain a visible presence in the department, undertaking clinical work regularly (a minimum of 50% of contracted hours). You will also be expected to coordinate and actively assist in the management and organisation of care provision within the Operating Department.

You will need to demonstrate an aptitude to leadership and have experience in managing staff. This must include experience in mentoring and taking charge of the department. You will work with Senior Nurses and Matron to manage the theatre budget to provide safe and effective patient care within allocated resources.

The chosen individual will be enthusiastic and expected to have strong managerial and leadership skills to be able to drive your team towards success. You must be committed to clinical excellence with effective communication, interpersonal and organisational skills.You should have a flexible approach to working hours.

The post holder will ensure that the teamwork as part of the MDT to provide direct support to Unit Managers in effectively running the operating list in safe and timely manner. Will also participate in clinical supervision programmes as appropriate and teach and act as a facilitator/mentor/preceptor to junior colleagues and others.

Support the training and development programme initiated by the Division to ensure staff members achieve their full potential. Maximise use of clinical resources, implementing best practice in patient flow, admission, and discharge arrangements.

The post holder will take a professional leadership role in partnership with the Senior Nurses and Matron. in developing the divisions’ strategic direction and policy framework, ensuring that the division contributes significantly to the achievement of the Trust’s objectives and that effective governance arrangements are implemented and maintained.

In addition, you must have:
Registration with the Health Professions Council or a NMC registered Nurse
Eligibility to work in the UK
Extensive knowledge of nursing care in a perioperative environment
Evidence of leading a team within a clinical environment
Proven experience of managing change within a clinical setting
A recognised qualification and experience of supporting learners would be advantageous.
Demonstrates a good working knowledge and compliance with CQC Standards

Please note if your employment starts before the 24/25 pay scales are implemented you will be paid under the 23/24 pay scales and any backpay will be adjusted accordingly. We have 27 operating rooms under UCH Theatres & Anesthesia Division which covers different specialties ranging from General surgery, Trauma & Orthopaedics, Bariatrics and upper GI surgery, Colorectal, Gynaecology, Urology, Oncology, Paediatrics, ENT, Maxillo Facial, Vascular and Plastic/ Breast surgery and Robotic Surgery. In addition, we also provide anaesthesia support in outlying areas such as endoscopy unit, radiotherapy, nuclear medicine, brachytherapy and interventional radiology.

Our new operating theatre complex in Grafton Way Building is now open which caters to elective orthopaedic and ENT and oral surgeries. Further career opportunities will be available with the opening of our Proton Beam Therapy centre.

In collaboration with University College London (UCL), we have successfully launched our anaesthesia and enhanced recovery training programmes for registered nurses/ practitioners in order to develop a multi skilled workforce

The successful candidate will hold the appropriate qualifications to be a current registered practitioner (RGN or ODP) and demonstrate evidence of continuing professional development.
