Due to a period of growth we have an exciting new opportunity for a Pre-Assessment Manager to join our well established team on a full time basis.
You will be a pivotal leader and will be responsible for leading and developing the pre assessment service, ensuring safe and effective pre operative care.
Spire Claremont Hospital has provided first-class independent healthcare at the heart of the South Yorkshire community since 1953. Our hospital is situated among beautifully landscaped grounds in Crosspool, Sheffield and it is situated 3 miles (about 20 minutes) to the south west of Sheffield city centre.
Claremont Hospital has 42 beds, three laminar flow theatres, 13 consulting rooms, a static MRI and CT scanner, and plain and digital X-ray. The hospital provides surgery and outpatients with diagnostic imaging services.
Duties and responsibilities:
Clinical
- Working autonomously, completes POA for a caseload of patients and backfilling protected clinic slots for short dated bookings, undertaking a targeted history with assessment of past medical, operative and anaesthetic history.
- Lead on the clinical triage of all patient Health Questionnaires to ensure appropriate POA pathway identified for all patients.
- Local hospital short dated bookings process to be followed to reduce pressure points and to ensure a smooth patient journey for urgent cases.
- Completes testing as per NICE guidelines (NG45), interprets and manages the results, and where appropriate initiates relevant referrals to appropriate staff.
- Completes venepuncture, electrocardiogram, lung function testing and requesting of x-ray as per policy.
- Identifies patients with specific health issues and undertakes relevant risk scoring where indicated and manages the results.
- Demonstrates appropriate review of previous anaesthetic documentation and is able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the key factors that would require referral for anaesthetist assessment.
- Follows up on outcomes of referrals to ensure fitness to proceed.
- Provides information about any specific pre-operative instructions, intraoperative care and discharge.
- Identifies cultural requirements, communication or other specialist health or social needs.
- Liaises with the anaesthetist and surgeon to determine fitness to proceed.
- Following assessment, seeks advice where necessary, to ensure the appropriate level of post-operative care can be determined.
- Communicates any special requirements and essential resources to the MDT team.
- Manages the pre-operative assessment service across all surgical disciplines for level 0/1/2/3 care facilities.
- Provides day to day supervision, including clinical supervision of junior nursing staff and students in POA.
- Ensure all staff complete e POA competency and new starters complete induction pack to include e POA
- Support recruitment, performance review, attendance management, disciplinary and grievance matters.
- Completes competency assessment, training and development and the mentoring of staff.
- Ensures work is carried out efficiently and to agreed working practice and protocols.
- Ensures that pre-operative elective surgical care planning and delivery is managed and delivered to national and local evidence based guidelines.
- Clinical outcome data is captured on POA clinical assurance board and fed in to 10@10 daily
- Undertakes audit and assessment and management of key performance indicators for POA service.
- Effectively communicate with all members of the multidisciplinary team and key stakeholders.
- Requests medical information from General Practitioners and other healthcare providers to other to ensure all relevant information is available for the anaesthetist and surgeon.
- Maintains a safe environment for patients, visitors and staff.
- Ensure that staff work to national and local best practice policy and guidance.
- Demonstrate effective leadership skills by supporting staff within a changing environment.
- Leads on the development of the e POA roll out and ongoing service.
- Actively reports on e POA at clinical governance including incident reporting and management on a monthly basis to Governance Lead.
- Ensure daily safety huddles to include completion of POA quality assurance board completion is undertaken
- Regular meetings are undertaken in line with Spire standard agenda template and documented minutes
- All staff to be aware of POA department risks and discussed at daily huddles and meetings
- Registered Nurse with NMC (No restrictions)
- Educated to degree level (or equivalent experience), with evidence of recent professional development
- Knowledge of working within a pre-operative assessment.
- Advance assessment skills in a POA or equivalent background.
- Able to work independently and prioritise patient caseload and POA workload.
- Ability to work autonomously and experience of supervision of staff.
- Experience of leadership
- Takes an active role in the supervision and teaching of staff and students, including assessment of EEs for junior staff.
- Well-developed communication skills, written verbal and IT.
