Principal Mechanical Engineer

We are currently looking for a talented and motivated Principal Mechanical Engineer to join our Energy and Special Interest Projects team in Edinburgh or Glasgow. This role can be worked flexibly with a minimum of 3 days per week in the office and the option of adjusted start and finish times.
You will be part of a multi-disciplinary team, leading and supporting delivery of a wide variety of small and large schemes spanning the RIBA Work Stages 2-7, including energy infrastructure (sub stations), commercial, industrial, leisure, and other interesting projects in remote locations (e.g. British Antarctic Survey Antarctic Infrastructure Modernisation Programme (AIMP)).
Consideration will be given to both Principal and Senior Engineer grades.
What does the role involve?
As our Principal Mechanical Engineer, you will lead and support delivery of the mechanical aspects of energy and building services related projects, conducting the design of mechanical systems and preparing drawings and specifications for equipment.
Duties will be varied but include the following:
  • Performing mechanical building services design including input to energy and renewables projects and technologies.
  • Performing building heat demand calculations.
  • Preparing feasibility, concept design and implementation studies.
  • Leading detail design of building services and energy projects.
  • Developing relationships with Clients and key suppliers.
  • Working in close collaboration with colleagues from other disciplines as required.
  • Participating in the preparation/presentation of proposals/bids as required including estimating timescales and costs for proposed works.
  • Assisting in the preparation of implementation budgets, programmes and hours estimates.
  • Leading teams conducting site survey work and ensuring that the work is carried out in accordance with Client and Sweco Health & Safety procedures.
  • Ensuring that the technical content of all work conducted is correct and completed in accordance within agreed timescales and budgets.
  • Providing technical guidance, support and training to colleagues and assist, where practicable, in mentoring and development of others.
To be successful in this role you’ll possess:
  • Experience of using CIBSE guidelines for building HVAC design.
  • Experience of the design and specification of heat generation and associated distribution equipment, ventilation equipment and ductwork systems, public health equipment and associated distribution equipment.
  • Experience of managing and conducting building energy and condition surveys.
  • Experience of supervising site installations, acceptance testing and certification.
  • Demonstrable experience in a similar role with strong project management skills.
  • The ability to manage a variety of projects meeting varying deadlines.
  • Strong problem-solving skills to work alongside clients, architects, and contractors to solve problems and come up with innovative solutions.
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal with the ability to adjust your style to suit the audience.
  • A good understanding, knowledge, and application of Information Management standards, including ISO 19650.
  • Up to date knowledge of the UK construction market, including current UK and Scottish Building Regulations and all relevant British Standards.
  • Knowledge and experience in the use of Revit, Auto CAD and IES software would be advantageous.
  • A degree in Building Services Engineering, or other related degree/masters.
  • A professional qualification with CIBSE or IMech E.
