Location: There is one temporary position based out of the Big Creek Research center in Astoria, OR.
Duration: This position is expected to start October 1, 2024 and last through December 31, 2024.
What you will do:
  • Conduct adult and juvenile salmon stream surveys by locating, driving to and walking or boating selected stream reaches. Locate and survey areas by GPS unit, reading written descriptions and maps and identifying landmarks. Operate a state vehicle. Contact private landowners to gain access to survey streams. Walk, boat, or swim stream in pre-selected survey areas.
  • Install, operate, and remove fish traps. Screw traps, box traps and other juvenile fish traps. Follow all safety protocols and checklists associated with rotary screw traps. Follow all landowner instructions associated with trap access on private land. Safely handle and identify all captured fish.

Working Conditions:
  • Requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day. This includes working at all hours and workdays in excess of eight hours. Work exceeding 40 hours per week requires prior approval by the supervisor. Position is eligible for overtime.
  • Requires frequent long-distance travel to study sites. Considerable travel in all types of weather.
  • Outside work in inclement weather in cold, swift streams.
  • Must be able to work and communicate effectively with ODFW, other government agencies, private landowners, and members of the public.
Requirements/Requested Skills:
Minimum qualifications are not established for this position; however, we are seeking applicants with the following experience or skills. Preference for interviews may be given to candidates with these skills and background:
  • Requires a valid driver license and an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to conduct field work under a variety of weather conditions ranging from heat in summer to cold in winter.
  • Experience conducting fish surveys, identifying adult fish species (especially salmonids)
  • Experience operating rotary screw traps, conducting surveys in stream environments, and identifying juvenile fish species (especially salmonids) is desirable.
  • Anyone who has or are in pursuit of a Fisheries or Wildlife Science degree or related degree in biological/ecological sciences.
