Salary Range: $48,000 - $53,000/Annualized, commensurate with education, experience and qualifications.

Essential Functions

Job Summary

In collaboration with the Director of Adult Community Programs, the Ceramis Coordinator will mange the cooridination of ceramic programs and classes, including teaching, and overseeing day-to-day operations and administration of the ceramic studio as related to community educational programs.

This position is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the daily operations and organization of the Ceramic Studio, primarily in support of the Adult Community Art Program (CAP). The duties include teaching CAP classes, recruiting and coordinating instructors for various skill levels, and ensuring smooth studio operations- such as work-flow organization, kiln firings, supply and material management, and kiln and equipment maintenance. The Ceramics Studio is a shared space, utilized by both the CAP and School of Art (So A). This role will work closely with the UTSA So A ceramics department head and faculty to support the needs of both degree students and CAP students. Additionally, this position requires the Ceramics Coordinator to be an artist actively pursuing professional development and exhibition of their own work.

Core Responsibilities:

Teaching and Administration:
  • Instruction of one to two adult community program ceramics classes per term, a total of 5 per year.
  • Assistance in substitute teaching in ceramics if needed.
  • Handling questions from students and instructors and generally serving as a central source of information regarding classes, kiln scheduling, lab hours, etc. Communication is the key word.
  • Ensures studio safety, policies and procedures are followed.
  • Coordinate shared purchasing of materials and maintenance of equipment and facilities with So A, CAP, and UTSA facilities personnel as needed.
  • Maintain a positive and helpful attitude towards the department and participants in general.

Ceramics Studio:
  • Oversees the day-to-day workflow keeping operations in the ceramic studio running smoothly.
  • Assist in the inventory, order, receive and organize ceramic materials and chemicals used by the ceramic area.
  • Maintain SDS sheets for material, chemicals, and equipment and prepare and maintain safety signage where needed.
  • Ensure shop slips and glazes are prepared and maintained. Coordinate testing of new glazes as needed.
  • Ensure the studio areas are clean, functional, and stocked for use.
  • Work with work-study students on studio operations and monitors or interns as required.
  • Equipment maintenance and repair: report broken equipment and help to facilitate repairs when possible; wheels, slab roller, clay mixer, glaze mixing equipment, electric kilns, etc.
  • Prepare shop signage and bulletin boards as needed (lab hours, clean up signs, workshop information, end of the semester deadlines for kiln firings, etc.)
  • Coordinate quarterly clay-slop disposal with an outside vendor through UTSA facilities.
  • Help and coordinate end of the semester clean-up of studio, including the removal of unclaimed bisque ware and glaze ware, the cleaning of clay traps under the sink, locker cleaning, etc.
  • Approach students and faculty who are using the studio and equipment inappropriately, and log instances of misuse and report if needed.
  • Ceramics Program Coordinator will be medically cleared and properly fitted with a respirator to complete duties.

Kiln facility and associated duties:
  • Coordinate kiln firing and schedules for community classes. Work with Young Artist Programs kiln scheduling needs as well as School of Art kiln use.
  • Responsible for loading, unloading, and firing of the gas and electric kilns, or coordination of firings with work-study, instructors, or other staff, for both bisqueware and glazeware of all levels of CAP classes each session. Deadlines must be considered in order to meet the needs of the classes. School of Art firings are generally facilitated by School of Art faculty, but will need assistance at various times.
  • Oversee the proper glazing and storage of ceramic works while in transition through the firing process. (Watch for improperly glazed pieces, pieces thrown too thick, pieces that are still too wet to be fired or other non-traditional inclusions or firing practices that do not fit within the ceramics Standard Operation Practice policy.)
  • Keep kiln room and kiln yard cleaned and organized including inside of kilns.
  • Help maintain proper storage and maintenance of kiln shelves and furniture.
  • Coordinate repairs or repair kilns, burners and safety equipment as needed for safe operation of the facility.
  • Assist in the designing and building of gas kilns with School of Art faculty as needed.
  • Work with UTSA safety staff to maintain Scishield online reporting and inspection walk throughs.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ceramics.
  • Three years of professional experience in professional development or training, planning, and management.
  • Sufficient knowledge and experience in the skills in throwing, handbuilding, sculpture, and glaze chemistry; pedagogy, awareness and sensitivity to the aesthetic requirement of instruction and the artistic practice; and in the technical knowledge of firing ceramic equipment and systems including proficiency in loading, firing and maintaining electric and natural gas downdraft kilns as well as raku kilns, alternative firing, and soda kilns.
  • Basic understanding of clerical procedures and systems such as recordkeeping and filing.
  • Demonstrated independent decision-making and problem-solving ability.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Masters of Fine Arts in Ceramics.
