Communications Manager

The Communications Manager’s primary duty is to develop and implement communications and marketing plans that effectively grow Sailors for the Sea Powered by Oceana (Sf S), increase ocean activism within the sailing and boating community, and increase participation in its programs, including Green Boating, Clean Regattas and KELP (Kids Environmental Lesson Plans). This position manages all Sailors for the Sea’s communications tools to increase supporters, drive program implementation, and convert followers into members, activists, and/or donors. The Communications Manager works collaboratively with other team members in the international communications and marketing department. This position reports to the Director, Sailors for the Sea.

The Communications Manager helps develop communications and marketing plans with clear objectives and measurable outcomes to achieve overall Sailors for the Sea program, advocacy, and fundraising goals through various communications channels. This position creates, executes, and monitors day-to-day email marketing, social media, paid advertising, and public relations work with messaging tailored to activate new and current supporters in the sailing and boating community. This position actively participates in data collection, reporting, and analysis to improve performance of the communications and marketing strategy over time. The Communications Manager helps position Sailors for the Sea as leader in sustainability and environmental advocacy in the sailing world by creating content for Sailors for the Sea’s blog series and pitching ideas to sailing media outlets.


Principal Duties and Responsibilities
Essential functions:
  • Write and build fundraising, advocacy, and newsletter emails to activate supporters in the sailing and boating community to donate, take action, and achieve other organizational goals.
  • Manage all Sf S’s social media platforms by creating and scheduling daily content, responding to inquiries, and reporting on social media performance.
  • Lead efforts to acquire new supporters in the sailing and boating community through developing effective paid social media advertisements and monitoring progress towards goals.
  • Act as day-to-day lead on reporting performance of digital fundraising and advocacy efforts.
  • Identify opportunities to increase awareness of Sf S program and supported Oceana campaigns through traditional and online media sources by cultivating and managing marketing relationships with key sailing media outlets, yacht clubs, sailing programs, and other sailing-related institutions that could help facilitate program, advocacy, and fundraising goals.
  • Research and write monthly articles for the Sf S blog, such as interviews with sailing influentials, program success stories, and pieces on green boating topics.
  • Stay informed on news and trends in the sailing industry, and for digital marketing, fundraising, and activism.
  • Perform basic maintenance and updates on the Sf S website as needed.
  • Other duties as needed.
Job Requirements
Education and experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field, such as communications, marketing, or journalism, and at least 5 years of professional experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise working with Constituent Relationship Management databases and managing social media platforms.
Skills and knowledge:
  • Goal driven with ability to create and measure quantifiable strategic outcomes.
  • Superb writing, editing, and verbal communication skills with experience in a variety of print and online platforms.
  • Energetic, flexible, and proactive; a team leader who can positively and productively impact both communications and administration initiatives.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with staff, other organizations, and stakeholders.
  • Ability to meet strict deadlines, work under pressure, and adapt to a fast-changing environment while maintaining humor and high energy.
  • Ability to think independently and problem solve, both within the team environment and independently.
  • Experience working with the sailing and boating industry is a plus.

The salary range for this position is $68-79K annually.
