COLORADO PARKS AND WILDLIFE

This work unit exists to manage Jackson Lake State Park, a large, water-based state park within the guidelines of Colorado State statutes, regulations, and Division of Parks policy and procedures for the use and benefit of hundreds of thousands of visitors who utilize the area annually. This unit provides a wide variety of recreational and educational opportunities to the public while working to ensure that safety and high-quality standards are met. It maintains and improves visitor facilities, park infrastructure, and natural resources within the park. This unit is responsible for providing visitor services, maintenance functions, natural resource protection, natural resource education, administrative functions, law enforcement, inter-agency cooperation and assisting with statewide programs. The work unit administers state park programs within the district and provides recreation and natural resource management expertise to Federal, State, County, local, and private entities.

Description of Job

The purpose of this position is to provide a variety of direct information services and facilities to the visitors of the park by working at the front desk, cleaning, and answering phones at the visitor center. It will manage a variety of visitor programs including book sales, public meeting spaces, and automated information systems. The position will act as an administrative assistant to the Park Manager with an emphasis on accounting, coordinating the temporary work program, and managing special projects. It will provide marketing expertise for the park and coordinates environmental education efforts between the GOCO Interpretation program and area school districts.

Managing the Visitor Center

Works directly with park visitors to answer questions about the park, update park brochures, assist with pass sales, answer phones, and conduct janitorial and maintenance duties in and around the visitor center.

Managing the Sales Program

Management of the visitor center book sales program to include setting up displays, maintaining inventory, accounting, and training of other employees to assist with the program.

Relaying Park Information to the Public
Management of the park's automated public information systems including the phones, internet websites, and ongoing press releases.

Manage the Conference Rooms and Supervision
Coordinate the park's public use programs at the visitor center including providing meeting spaces to civic groups, working with visitor center volunteers, working with the park “friends” group, and supervising temporary employees.

Accounting
Assist the Park Manager with accounting functions to include processing and receiving reports, entering expenditures into the checkbooks/computer programs, and processing temporary work program paperwork, and CORE entry.

Environmental Interpretation
Coordinates the park’s environmental education efforts. Works with local school districts and community groups to offer programming. Works with GOCO interpreter to schedule programs and to ensure that they are of high quality and educational.

Marketing Events
Assist the park manager in the marketing efforts for the park including activities, facilities and special events.

Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights
Minimum Qualifications:

Three years of experience in administration or customer service in an office environment in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position.

Substitutions

  • Appropriate education in accounting, business, wildlife management, biology,, agriculture, or related field of study will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current or former Colorado Parks & Wildlife work or volunteer experience is considered.
  • Current or former State experience relevant to this position.
  • Excellent customer service skills, problem-solving abilities, and critical thinking.
  • Demonstrates initiative and self-motivation.
  • Keen attention to detail.
  • Exceptional organizational, written communication, and public speaking skills.
  • Ability to work well independently as well as in/with a team.
  • Proficiency in the use of Google email, Google Docs, Zoom/Google Meet, and the Colorado Operations Resource Engine (CORE). Knowledgeable in Word, Excel, and Adobe programs.

Conditions of Employment:
  • Colorado residency is required at the time of application.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state of Colorado driver's license if operating a State vehicle.
  • Work is typically 8 or 10 hours shifts between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. but may vary depending on need. Weekends may be required.
  • Travel may be necessary 1-3 times per year for in-services and trainings to maintain certifications.
  • Former State employees who were disciplinarily terminated or resigned in lieu of termination must disclose the information on the application and provide an explanation why the prior termination or resignation should not disqualify their application from the current position. (Please Note: Absent extraordinary circumstances, prior disciplinary termination or resignation in lieu of termination will disqualify the applicant from future State employment with DNR).
