The Part-Time Park Ranger position is a year-round part-time position working between 10 - 25 hours a week. Must be available to work, holidays, evenings, and weekends. Work schedule will vary.

Hiring range for this position is $16.86 - $20.16 per hour. Initial placement for new employees is customarily at entry level through 35% percentile. Pay grade for this position is 11.

GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:

Performs responsible skilled work involving a variety of assignments at the County and school parks. Work is performed under the regular supervision of a Park Program Manager. Daily guidance and direction is provided by Senior Park Rangers. Direction is provided to Recreation Facility Operators and Community Service Workers.


Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:
Patrolling the park to ensure patrons' safety and enjoyment; ensuring the park equipment is maintained, the park is clean, and reservations are adhered to; inspecting parks and school parks; secures monies used in transactions and collected; preparing and maintaining files and records.

  • Opens and closes park.

  • Collects and accounts for fees.

  • Patrols park to ensure patron use, safety, and enjoyment.

  • Enforces park rules and regulations; patrols park areas.

  • Cleans facilities, grounds, and restrooms.

  • Picks up trash, empties garbage, and maintains park equipment.

  • Supervises concession, pool, and facility operations.

  • Directs traffic and assists with special events.

  • Maintains records and prepares reports on park activities.

  • Secures park buildings at closing.

  • Assists in the preparation and presentation of park interpretive programs.

  • Responds to inquiries and assists park visitors.

  • Submits work orders for park and school park repairs

  • Assists in set-up or repair of facilities.

  • Maintains a clean and safe work location.

  • Takes reservations and reviews on-line reservation system regularly.

  • Performs related tasks as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Some knowledge of the state laws and local ordinances governing park and recreational areas. Ability to enforce rules and regulations in a firm and courteous manner; follow oral and written directions; prepare detailed reports; communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, subordinates, and the general public.


MANAGEMENT PREFERENCES:

Previous field of parks and recreation industry related experience is strongly preferred.


Minimum Education / Experience requirements

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Requires graduation from high school and some experience in recreation, parks, or other public contact work. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.


SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina. Position is a safety-sensitive position as defined by the Drug Free Workplace Policy. This is a seasonal position. Possession of current CPR, AED, and first aid certifications.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This is medium work requiring the exertion of up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires standing, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, peripheral vision, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, use of measuring devices, operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.
