The Mission of the Coconino County Adult Probation Department is to create a safer community by reducing the number of future crimes, thereby reducing the number of future victims. This is to be accomplished by providing to our clients individualized programming and supervision to include:

  • Cognitive-Behavioral education, treatment and supervision based upon individual assessment of risk and need.
  • Restorative justice to the community and victims.
  • Community and client involvement and collaboration.
  • Effective, quality-based methods of supervision.
  • Measurable processes and outcomes.

Coconino County:
Coconino County, Arizona with an enclosed area of approximately 18,600 square miles, is the second largest county in the United States. Included within its boundaries are such natural wonders as the Grand Canyon, the towering San Francisco Peaks, Lake Powell, and the red rocks of Sedona. Breathtaking scenery and exciting outdoor recreational opportunities abound throughout the area. The county seat is Flagstaff, a city of over 60,000 inhabitants located at an elevation of 7,000 feet. The main campus of Northern Arizona University is located in Flagstaff, as is the Lowell Observatory, and the County boasts a vibrant arts/entertainment community.

The beauty and variety of the landscape is reflected in the shared traditions of the many cultures that thrive within Coconino County. The County is home to a diverse population that includes a large Hispanic community and members of the Hopi, Navajo, and Havasupai Native American Indian Tribes. The County truly is a special place to live and work.

Nature of Work:
Under general supervision performs professional work of considerable difficulty in supervising correctional casework services at the direction of the superior court; supervises assigned staff of entire unit; performs related work as assigned; establishes and maintains a positive and healthy work environment.

Typical Duties

  • Supervises trains and evaluates staff
  • Assigns cases to staff
  • Directs staff regarding casework and treatment strategies
  • Plans and coordinates the activities of a unit
  • Assists in development of policies and procedures
  • Ensures staff compliance with applicable laws, procedures and policies
  • Recommends and may perform disciplinary actions
  • Provides information and statistics, and prepares reports and correspondence
  • May perform duties of line staff

Minimum Qualifications

(Juvenile):
Master's degree in criminal justice, behavioral science, or business/correctional/public administration and two years experience as a probation/parole officer, social worker, of which one year of that experience is as a lead probation officer or supervisor in a correctional or residential treatment setting; OR
Bachelor's degree in one of the above cited fields and three years of experience in the above areas; of which one of the years is as a lead probation officer or supervisor in a correctional or residential treatment setting OR
Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, but must have Bachelor's degree which is required by (ARS 8-203).

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS (Juvenile):
Must possess a valid Arizona driver's license. Must successfully complete a criminal history check relevant to employment since persons convicted of a felony may not be childcare workers in Arizona.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Adult):

Bachelor's degree with a preference being given to a major or minor in the behavioral sciences (Supreme Court Order 73-1 TR-ADM-PROB) and three years progressively responsible experience as a probation officer; of which one year of that experience is as a lead probation officer or supervisor in a correctional or residential treatment setting OR, any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.


ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS (Adult):

Must successfully complete a criminal history check relevant to employment. Must obtain an Arizona driver's license by date of hire and maintain it throughout employment. Must achieve a certification of completion/proficiency of 40 hour Defensive Tactics Academy with annual 8-12 hour review. If Probation Officer chooses to be armed, must attend and pass 40 hour Firearms Academy and maintain a 20 hour annual "shoot" for recertification purposes; complete a minimum of 16 hours of on-going education within the judicial system certified by the Committee on Judicial Education and Training (COJET); may be required to attend Faculty Skills Development Class and become statewide instructor.


This position is exempt from overtime and is at-will.

This position is safety sensitive.

  • Plan, review, and direct the work of others
  • Communicate and deal effectively with offenders, family members and others
  • Understand, interpret, and apply state laws and administrative rules, court procedures, and directives, and County policies and procedures
  • Prepare and maintain complex records and reports
  • Make sound casework decisions independently and in accordance with established policies and procedures
  • Work safely and support the culture of workplace safety
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, clients, other agencies and the public
  • Follow written and verbal instructions
