Dr. Glen Barber’s Laboratory, situated within the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center (OSUCCC) and the Pelotonia Institute for Immuno-Oncology (PIIO), is devoted to studying cellular sensing mechanisms that trigger host defense countermeasures in response to microbial infection. This has included his discovery of a signaling pathway controlled by a new innate immune regulator referred to as STING (stimulator of interferon genes) that is activated by DNA based microbes such as viruses, bacteria, and parasites. He is interested in developing viral oncolytic agents and immunotherapeutic for the treatment of cancer and understanding the role of innate immunity & the control of cancer and Understanding mechanisms of inflammation associated cancer.

We are looking for a highly motivated individual to join the Barber Lab as a Researcher 3 at the OSUCCC and PIIO. The Researcher 3 will work closely with the principal investigator (PI) to develop project goals, execute research experiments independently, and play a major role in the dissemination of research findings. The Researcher 3 will collaborate with research staff internal and external to the lab, so strong organizational and communication skills are key. Must be able to adapt to new technologies and able to operate in a fast-paced work environment.

Essential Duties Breakdown:
  • Oversee the daily operations of the laboratory, ensuring a safe, efficient, and productive work environment. Maintain laboratory inventory, including ordering supplies and managing vendor relationships. Ensure compliance with institutional, state, and federal regulations, including EHS lab inspections, preparation and submission of IBC, IACUC, and IRB protocol applications, and hazardous waste disposal, etc. Oversee laboratory staffing, including job posts, interview coordination, hiring, and onboarding. Supervise, train, and mentor junior laboratory staff and be point person for junior laboratory staff performance evaluation.
  • Assist in the design, planning, and execution of research projects focused on viral oncolytic agents and cancer immunotherapeutics. Provide technical expertise in molecular biology, virology, immunology, and cell culture techniques. Maintain accurate and detailed laboratory records and ensure data integrity. Prepare reports, presentations, and manuscripts for publication.
  • Assist in budget preparation. Monitor laboratory expenses and work with grant and non-grant fiscal administrators on cost allocations and other expense adjustments. Assist with identification of funding opportunities and assist with grant applications and proposal writing.
  • Perform other duties as required.

Minimum Required Qualifications: Master's Degree, Ph D or equivalent experience required. 5-6 years of relevant experience required. 6-8 years of relevant experience preferred.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Experience with flow cytometry is preferred.
  • Knowledge of immunology or cancer biology is preferred.
  • Experience with molecular biology and/or cellular biology is preferred.
  • Excellent people skills and the ability to work within a team required.
  • Ability to translate, adapt and apply academic and/or practical knowledge in the conduct of biological/health science research is required.
  • Previous experience with laboratory management is required.

Target hiring range for this position: $64,300 - $84,550
