The Role
As the APS5 Photographer, you will be responsible for the coordination, capturing and publishing of high-quality images for the Department, as well as supporting Defence Ministers and senior Defence leadership while managing a dynamic and fast-paced workload.

You will contribute to the daily workflow of the imagery team, manage photographic tasks, handle copyright issues, prioritise requests for support, and liaise with key stakeholders. You will ensure that technical and metadata standards are upheld, provide quality assurance, and coordinate the timely release of imagery and public affairs content. Additionally, you will support the imagery managers with Defence’s digital asset management system and provide training to personnel.

This role involves occasional after-hours and weekend work as part of the team’s on-call roster. Occasional travel, sometimes at short notice, is also required.

About our Team
The Defence Digital Media (DDM) team provides critical imagery support aligned with Defence Australia's mission to inform, engage, and enhance the nation's defence through transparent and effective communication. The team's primary function is to deliver high-quality imagery for internal communication, public affairs, and media.

DDM coordinates imagery collation for major operations, exercises and events like Anzac Day, while also managing the Defence Image Gallery and Defence You Tube channel. They ensure all imagery meets strict technical and metadata standards and oversee the distribution of cleared imagery to Defence leadership, ministerial offices, and media outlets. Additionally, the team provides technical guidance to Defence camera teams, manages copyright for external requests, and leads the national Digital Signage pilot.

Our Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate for the APS5 Imagery Specialist role will have proven experience in digital photography, particularly in public affairs and news photography, along with strong technical skills. They should possess the ability to provide feedback and guidance to others within Defence’s public affairs workforce, ensuring high standards are maintained across the team. An in-depth understanding of photographic requirements, including metadata standards, copyright regulations, and digital asset management systems, is essential.

Experience with ENG and/or video production is advantageous. The candidate must demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills, the ability to manage competing priorities under pressure, and a proven track record of meeting tight deadlines. They should also excel at building positive relationships with diverse stakeholders, including high-level executives and leadership.
