The Australian National Maritime Museum is seeking an experienced and organised Outreach Program Coordinator to join our Fleet and Collections team in this full-time non-ongoing position for an initial 24 months with possibility of ongoing.

The Outreach Program Coordinator position supports the Museum’s National community outreach program. It does this by coordinating the delivery of programs which enable staff and volunteers working at maritime museums, galleries, and other relevant organisations to successfully care for and interpret objects or collections to audiences throughout the nation.
Activities and projects supported by the Maritime Museum are linked to three long standing programs:
  • Maritime Museum Assistance Program Support Scheme
  • Australian Register of Historic Vessels
  • Australian Maritime Museums Council
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate excellent communication and administrative skills, combined with a sound knowledge of Australian maritime culture and technology. The position is based in Sydney, but some interstate travel is required.

Key accountabilities:

  • Manage all aspects of the Maritime Museums of Australia Project Support Scheme (MMAPSS); this work encompasses providing information, support, and guidance to prospective applicants for MMAPSS grants, monitoring of grant expenditures, organising the internship program, coordinating staff outreach funded by the Program and reporting to government on outcomes.
  • Coordinate the delivery of the Museum’s physical and advisory outreach programs including MMAPSS, the Australian Maritime Museums Council, and professional staff support. Collaborate with the Touring Program to align offsite work and streamline communications, through the development and maintenance of an effective network of relationships.
  • Provide governance support to the Australian Maritime Museum Councils (AMMC) Executive Board and the AMMC general membership. Key tasks include maintaining the AMMC website, organising workshops and travel arrangements, coordinating, and circulating proposed agenda and directions for meetings of the Board and maintain records for reporting purposes. As a member of the Executive Board, perform position holder duties as Company Secretary as nominated.
  • Assume operational responsibility for the Australian Register of Historic Vessels including public outreach, review of and research into vessel applications and transfer of data onto the ARHV web site. Key tasks include providing governance support for the ARHV Council to ensure the integrity of the register as a national resource in the heritage sector.
  • Coordinate and organise the Annual Maritime Museum Administrators course including the participation of both speakers and attendees in accordance with the established program.
  • Ensure regional program objectives are clearly defined, planned, scoped, documented, communicated, delivered, and signed off, within in agreed timeframes and budgets.
  • Maintain and communicate a forward calendar of outreach programs to ensure that program information is available to internal and external stakeholders.

Selection Criteria:

Essential
  • Knowledge and previous experience with administering an outreach and grant program designed for small organisations with volunteer staff that may require guidance through the application and acquittal process.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and interest in the recording and promoting of Australian maritime history.
  • Well-developed administration skills including basic financial administration, file maintenance, minute taking, keyboard and computer skills (Excel & Word).
  • Ability to work to deadlines, organise priorities and ability to work with a minimum of supervision.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills (written and verbal) with an ability to present and communicate information to staff and volunteers working in a diverse range of institutions associated with maritime heritage.
  • Ability to work independently, show initiative and use sound personal judgment when making decisions.
Desirable
  • Knowledge of Australia's museums and related entities that collect, conserve, store, interpret and display Australia's maritime heritage.
  • Knowledge of the needs and resourcing requirements of regional museums specifically.
  • A Bachelor's Degree in history, Museum Studies, or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to undertake succinct research reports.

Selection for this position will be made on the basis of relative merit which will be assessed against each item of the selection criteria. Applications that do not address the selection criteria will not be considered for short listing by the Selection Committee. As part of the selection process the selection committee may invite candidates to undertake psychometric test, you should advise the selection committee if you have any special needs. Psychometric tests may be used as the initial short-listing test or later in the selection process. Some tests are very short while others may take one or more hours.
