About the Role

Rare Cancers Australia
is a flexible, equal-opportunity employer. We are a growing organisation with a professional, friendly and supportive team. We have a genuine, caring and positive culture and working environment and provide access to further training and career development opportunities.

Rare Cancer Patient Support Specialists
(known internally as Specialist Cancer Navigators) play a pivotal role in providing personalised support and guidance to individuals navigating the complexities of rare cancer diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship. This position offers a unique opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of those affected by rare cancers by offering empathetic support, facilitating access to resources, and advocating for patient-centred care.

Reporting to the Head of Patient programs, your key responsibilities will include:

  • Serving as a primary point of contact (primarily via telephone / videoconferencing, however occasionally face to face) for individuals diagnosed with rare cancers and their families, offering emotional support, practical guidance, and tailored information throughout their cancer journey.
  • Conducting comprehensive assessments of individual needs, preferences, and challenges to develop personalised care plans and strategies.
  • Providing information and education on various aspects of rare cancers, including treatment options, clinical trials, supportive care services, and financial assistance programs.
  • Collaborating closely with healthcare professionals, including oncologists, nurses, and allied health professionals, to ensure coordinated and holistic care delivery.
  • Advocating for patient rights and preferences within the healthcare system, addressing barriers to access and navigating insurance, reimbursement, and disability issues.
  • Facilitating connections with peer support networks, community organisations, and other relevant resources to enhance social support and empower individuals to become active participants in their care.
  • Maintaining accurate documentation of interactions and outcomes, ensuring confidentiality and adherence to ethical standards.
This role is offered on a 6 month fixed term basis to cover a parental leave absence. However, opportunities for extension or permanency may arise during the contract term.
