CSIRO’s Energy Business Unit is seeking a Research Projects Officer to work with the direct air capture team on scaling carbon capture technologies designed for capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere and point sources of CO2. This includes a significant material synthesis and testing component.
You will assist with the synthesis of new materials and their detailed characterisation to support scale-up of carbon capture technologies. The ultimate goal of the team is to scale technologies to pilot scale and beyond.
The team has a number of strategic and commercial projects looking at deploying CSIRO's CO2 capture technology into the field.
Your duties will include:
  • Carry out material synthesis and characterisation with an emphasis on carbon capture sorbents
  • Assess the performance of the materials using a range of analytical techniques
  • Design bespoke test systems and methodologies where required
  • Carry out routine maintenance ensuring all equipment is up to specification
  • Under limited supervision perform synthetic methodologies to select the correct practices to carry out the synthesis safely, in doing so adhere to CSIRO HSE policies
  • Under limited supervision, design and perform experiments and laboratory analyses, design new materials and processes by adapting existing techniques and components to meet special circumstances or undertake modifications to methods requiring some innovation.
  • Design data recording and entry systems.
  • Conduct literature reviews, investigations and inspections in the laboratory including associated analysis possibly involving statistical or graphics software.
  • Perform some non-routine analyses or technology development activities using a range of techniques, often working on a number of parallel and competing tasks.
  • Independently test possible solutions to resolve identified problems.
  • May have responsibility for maintaining laboratory or fieldwork consumables and scheduling and instructing staff in the use of shared equipment.


Location: Kensington, Perth, WA
Salary: AU$93K - AU$106K per annum (pro-rata for part-time) + up to 15.4% superannuation.
Tenure: Specified Term of 3 years – Full time.

To be considered you will need:
Essential
Under CSIRO policy only those who meet all essential criteria can be appointed.
  • Relevant bachelor’s degree or equivalent relevant work experience in chemistry, analytical chemistry, chemical engineering or material synthesis
  • Demonstrated experience with material handling and testing.
  • Fundamental understanding of engineering
  • Technical skills in material analysis in order to test the developed materials.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (i.e. Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point, Project, Teams).


Desirable
  • Ph D in chemistry or chemical engineering
  • Experience with experimental instrumentation and controls.
  • Experience handling new materials safely including use of correct PPE.
