Introduction

Australia’s acquisition of conventionally-armed, nuclear-powered submarines is historic and transformational. The Pathway announced on 14 March 2023, will deliver Australia a world-class capability that will see our nation become one of only seven countries that operate nuclear-powered submarines. This game changing capability will enhance Australia’s capacity to deter conflict and support security, peace and economic prosperity in the Indo-Pacific.
This significant undertaking presents an exciting opportunity for a dedicated, committed and aspirational leader to lead, develop and shape key Human Resource services across the Australian Submarine Agency.
The successful candidate should have extensive experience in leading teams to deliver complex HR Services support, recruitment services, industrial relations, developing organisational culture and people policies, and ideally have experience in establishing new programs to meet strategic objectives.
The ideal candidate will be a collaborative leader who has a nuclear mindset, exemplifies APS Values and engenders a culture of innovation and agility. They will be self-aware, and positive in considering and respecting diversity of ideas and the perspectives of others. They will demonstrate the capability to provide timely and accurate advice to senior leaders and Government on complex matters. They will have outstanding judgement, strategic awareness, and parliamentary acumen.

Your Role

The Assistant Director General – People Services is responsible for supporting the implementation of the Government's commitment to deliver the nuclear-powered submarine program by leading key Human Resource services across the Australian Submarine Agency including recruiting the APS workforce; nuclear powered submarine program culture and people policies; career development programs for staff, management of graduate and early entry programs; providing support for visits; and providing pastoral care support to Australian personnel posted overseas.
This is a key role where you will lead and build a team of qualified and experienced people including ADF members, public service officers and contractors to manage and advise on Human Resources. You will be required to manage relationships across Government and establish effective relationships with industry and our AUKUS counterparts.
As a member of the senior leadership group, you must be able to promote a culture of innovation, collaboration and agility. You must also be able to effectively manage complex legislative and ethical frameworks to achieve capability outcomes for Defence and the Australian Government.
