The Austrian Archaeological Institute (Oe AI) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (Oe AW), the largest non-
university establishment for fundamental research in Austria, is offering a position as

ACADEMY SCIENTIST (F/M/X)
(part-time, 30 hours per week)

as of November 1st, 2024.

The position is initially advertised for one year, with the possibility of an extension of up to 6 years and then
a permanent position after a successful evaluation. A temporary increase in the level of employment to full-
time is planned for the first 3 years (Federal Monuments Office, Bundesdenkmalamt – BDA project funding).
The successful candidate will work in the Numismatics Research Group of the Department of Classical
Studies and be responsible for the scientific processing and analysis of coin finds from Austria – from
antiquity to modern times. A corresponding project was launched at the ÖAW in the first half of 2018 in
cooperation with the BDA (Department of Archaeology), the Austrian Research Association for Numismatics
(Österreichischen Forschungsgesellschaft für Numismatik, University of Vienna) and the Coin Cabinet of the
Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.

Your tasks:

• Participation in the department's research program with a special focus on the national coordination

of the scientific processing of numismatic finds from Austria, but also from other excavations
conducted by the Oe Ai (e.g. Ephesos)

• Scientific documentation, including photography, identification and publication of numismatic finds

from past and present excavations in Austria, in close cooperation with the BDA, regional and local
museums, as well as archaeologists working in Austria.

• Analysis and interpretation of larger, self-contained collections of material, also with a project-related

focus.

Your profile:

• A doctorate in a historical or archaeological subject (Dr. phil./Ph D)

• University training in numismatics and relevant work experience – including with coins finds

(required)

• Scientific publication activity in the field of numismatics

• Independence and creativity, willingness to work in a multidisciplinary environment, ability to work

in a team

• Good computer skills, especially experience with databases

• Project-related mobility within Austria

The annual gross salary is € 49.876,05 according to the collective agreement of the Austrian Academy of
Sciences.
