To strengthen our Research & Development team, based in Nivelles (Business Innovation Centre), Belgium, we are looking for a talented individual to fill the position of Junior R&D Engineer Steel (VIE).

About the role

As a Junior R&D Engineer Steel (VIE), you will report to the Application Engineer Steel and will be part of the Global Application Steel team. You will be joining an international team focusing on iron & steelmaking applications. You will directly support the development of innovative products / solutions for the iron & steelmaking industry, with a strong focus on sustainability and low environmental footprint products/solutions.

Your role and responsibilities:

Contribute to the team in the implementation of injection trial unit (an equipment that allows lime injection in the steel making process). Within this responsibility, you will:
- Collecting and analysing data gathered from the injection trial unit
- Perform VIU (value in use) calculations
- Participating in project team meetings, as well as pilot or industrial trials at suppliers and/or customers site.
- Contributing to the design of the fixed installation.
Run thermodynamic calculation using Thermo-Calc software (which you’ll be trained for during the VIE program) , to help quantify the effect of our product in steelmaking processes.
Prepare and run experiments in the steel lab according to appropriate protocols to develop innovations, provide technical support, develop expertise.
Perform market analysis: monitor the latest news regarding the “green steel” transition
(10% of your job scope).
Maintain our existing communication tools (Digimind, Power BI, dashboard) and improve them to enhance our communication with the business unit.

About you:

Master’s Degree in chemical engineering, materials engineering, metallurgy or similar field.
0-1 year of previous professional experience. Internships, and previous experience in lab environment are considered plus.
Interest in all aspects of R&D, from initial idea to proof-of-concept demonstration.
Proactive, autonomous and eager to have an hands-on experience.
Knowledge of Steelmaking processes (i.e. EAF, LF, BOF, BF), minerals and mineral processing is preferable.
Understanding of business and marketing concepts.
Very good communication skills, able to interact with customer and different seniority levels.
Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Power BI or similar).
Analytical mindset, enjoys working with data and numbers.
Interest and/or prior experience in Project management.
Fluent in English as a working language. French language is a plus.
