Scientist: Development of measurement technology for the characterization of electrical components

Munich

PART TIME

October 20, 2024

The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research units throughout Germany and is a leading applied research organization. Around 32 000 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.4 billion euros.

Fraunhofer EMFT conducts cutting-edge applied research on sensors and actuators for people and the environment. The over hundred employees in the three locations in Munich, Oberpfaffenhofen and Regensburg possess impressive long-term experience and extensive know-how in the fields of microelectronics and microsystem technology. These nano- and microtechnologies are the basis for the other competence areas at Fraunhofer EMFT: sensor solutions, safe and secure electronics, and micropumps. It is precisely the interdisciplinary interplay of these competencies that produces pioneering solutions. As a result, Fraunhofer EMFT is ideally positioned to master current challenges in the areas of Io T and smart systems. You can actively contribute to the development of new test systems in these fields of application.

Electrostatic discharges (ESD) of far less than 100 V could become a showstopper for the latest circuits in microelectronics and quantum devices. To overcome this challenge, our interdisciplinary Analysis & Test team works closely with leading semiconductor manufacturers. Together, we develop innovative methods for determining the load in production and for the precise characterization of electronic components.
Precision and repeatability of transient loads and measurements in the picosecond range play a key role here. In addition, our physical analysis methods allow clear conclusions to be drawn about the failure mechanisms. The Analysis & Test group has been closely networked with industry for over 30 years and is internationally renowned for its expertise in the fields of electrostatic discharge (ESD) and trusted electronics with state-of-the-art semiconductor components.
We are looking for reinforcements to further expand our expertise in future-proof topics. Help us to find the best solutions and continue to set benchmarks and standards.

What you will do

  • Development, characterization and simulation of measurement setups using high-frequency and pulse technology methods
  • Characterization and simulation of ESD strengths and the transient behaviour of semiconductor and quantum structures
  • Characterization of components before and after ESD exposure
  • Physical damage analysis after ESD exposure
  • Investigation of the influence of ESD damage on reliability
  • Programming the control of measuring devices to automate complex measurement sequences and evaluations
  • Publication of research results in specialist journals and presentation at conferences
  • Technical supervision of students for final theses and working student activities

What you bring to the table

  • Successfully completed Master's degree in engineering or natural sciences in the field of electrical engineering, physics or similar
  • Understanding of basic relationships in semiconductor devices
  • Programming skills in Python and ideally initial experience in programming measurement routines and evaluations
  • Ideally specialist knowledge and initial experience in one or more of the following R&D areas: broadband high-frequency and/or pulse technology in measurement and simulation (e.g. with ADS/EMPro/Spectre)
  • Enthusiasm and enjoyment in the joint development of high-quality results
  • Independent and structured way of working, with an eye for detail and problem-solving skills
  • Openness and an appreciative approach for successful cooperation within the team, as well as with project partners and customers
  • Motivation to familiarize yourself with new topics and create synergies

What you can expect

  • A varied role with meaning and responsibility - you will be dedicated to the challenges of our society and help shape the future!
  • Room for commitment and creativity - you can set your own priorities, realize your ideas in the team and in the projects!
  • Member of an interdisciplinary, international team with over 30 years of experience in industry and research and integration into a large scientific network
  • Appreciative and tolerant institute culture with structured onboarding and support from a mentor
  • Individual and extensive training opportunities and career boosters for your professional and personal development, e.g. opportunities for a doctorate or participation in the Fraunhofer TALENTA program for the advancement of women
  • Work-life balance through flexible working time models, mobile working, office with children and many other offers
  • Good transport connections and a discounted job ticket with employer subsidy

The weekly working time is 39 hours. This position is also available on a part-time basis. We value and promote the diversity of our employees' skills and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of age, gender, nationality, ethnic and social origin, religion, ideology, disability, sexual orientation and identity. Severely disabled persons are given preference in the event of equal suitability. Appointment, remuneration and social security benefits based on the public-sector collective wage agreement (TVöD). Additionally Fraunhofer may grant performance-based variable remuneration components.
With its focus on developing key technologies that are vital for the future and enabling the commercial utilization of this work by business and industry, Fraunhofer plays a central role in the innovation process. As a pioneer and catalyst for groundbreaking developments and scientific excellence, Fraunhofer helps shape society now and in the future.
