About the role
The Prime Ministers’ Office is seeking a Chief Press Secretary to join his team. This pivotal role places you at the heart of the Prime Minister’s communications function, managing communications staff across the Beehive and communicating the policies and initiatives of our Government to the New Zealand public. It is unique and rewarding work, in a high impact and genuinely fast-paced environment.
As the Chief Press Secretary, you will join a tight knit and trusted senior team on the 9 th floor of the Beehive responsible for supporting the Prime Minister. You will also work closely with Press Secretaries and all media and communications staff within the Executive, leading their collective efforts to ensure all communications from the Executive are consistent with the agreed priorities and messages of the Government. You’ll also be responsible for providing a strategic outlook, and supporting the Prime Minister with the development and promotion of key strategies.
This is an events-based position based on the remainder of the 3-year parliamentary term.
What you’ll bring to the role:
- You will be an experienced political operator with a significant background in media, communications and/or public relations
- A skilled strategist, you will be adept at both anticipating a story before it happens and creating the narrative
- Your new role will require you to understand a range of complex material, with an eye for detail and the ability to communicate complex ideas to a variety of audiences, through a broad range of channels
- With a highly attuned awareness of both the media and the political landscape, you will be social media savvy and confident in writing speeches and press releases
- In this highly relational environment, your advanced interpersonal skills will set you up for success, building the confidence of the Prime Minister’s office, the wider team, and coalition partners
- You will be an experienced professional leader who can develop and support media and communications staff capabilities for success
