Job Description: Data Visualisation Analyst
Position Purpose: The purpose of this role is to discover, interpret, engage, and visualise the

compelling story behind the data to inform and support strategic decision
making related to research, academic and enterprise (in particular
providing analytical support for projects led by the Provost, Graduate
Research School, Centre for Education Transformation [including survey
visualisations and survey support] and Enterprise). This role will provide a
bridge between the language of the business and the language of data
science to unlock insights from the datasets and put findings into context.

About this area The Office of the Provost is responsible for the strategic leadership to the
University across the areas of research, learning and teaching, enterprise
and Pacific student success, in order to drive the development and
implementation of strategies, policies and standards that underpin the
delivery of quality research and teaching across the institution.

Accountabilities
Conduct advanced • Understand how the University’s data is gathered, manipulated,
analytics on research, organised and reported across enterprise systems and over time, to be
academic and able to accurately extract data for specific KPI purposes. Investigate and
enterprise analyse data to support performance improvements and strategic
performance data initiatives and identify areas of strong performance along with areas of
concern.
  • Design and manage monitoring reports and other analytical tools to
support the quality assurance and performance improvement of the
Provost portfolio. This involves working closely with the Provost
leadership team to determine reporting needs.

  • Use quality tools and techniques to identify, analyse and visualise data
for continuous improvement activities.
  • Use this knowledge to generate meaningful visualisations to assist in
strategic and operational decision making for the Office of the Provost,
as well as the wider University, including SLT. Work closely with other
staff members to ensure that trends identified by data visualisations are
statistically significant so that objective assessment of whether change
and improvement have indeed occurred.
  • Understand the processes of management decision making so that the
data visualisations created provide answers that are useful and intuitive.
  • Support self-service and discovery of business intelligence and analytics
opportunities within the organisation.
  • Improve the use of information, analytics and data within the university.
Outcomes
  • A relevant range of evidence and analysis is available to the Office of the
Provost leadership team.
  • Functional and accurate data modelling that supports the Office of
Provost’s operational performance, planning timeframes and strategic
business intelligence needs.
  • Timely and accurate reports and analyses.
  • Clearly communicate simple analytical findings in an insightful,
appropriate and understandable format.




Future-focused • Utilising a range of internal and (where possible) external data sources,
intelligence create and maintain insights into the current and future needs for
tertiary learning and where opportunities for the University may exist.

  • Complete regular competitor and environmental scans and provide
analysis of the impact of these for the Provost portfolio and wider
univeristy. This may involve the regular collection of data/information to
create datasource(s) that will inform Power BI dashboards. Ensure that
these reports are shared internally with relevant stakeholders so that the
analysis support other streams of work.

Outcome

  • Analytic visualisations that inform the growth of opportunities for
research, academic and enterprise for the University ensuring a high
level of integrity and relevance. Strategic management • Support management-level decision-making, conduct analyses and
support for the Office report on performance data across a range of high volume organisational

Student Experience Survey, PREQ, Graduate Destination Survey, among
others and support where required the work relating to surveys

Solution Design - • Support and lead design sessions in prototyping new solutions for the
Process purpose of enhancing business processes, operations, and information

process flow.
  • Direct the requirements development for applying technology to satisfy
business needs.
  • Elicit requirements using interviews, document analysis, requirements
workshops, site visits, business process descriptions, use cases,
scenarios, business analysis, task and workflow analysis.
  • Critically evaluate information gathered from multiple sources, reconcile
conflicts and decompose high-level information into details.




Solution Design – • Strategic design and mapping of business requirements and solutions to
Technical system/technical requirements.

  • Provide input into the test planning process and carry out functional
testing against business requirements for assigned changes.
  • Collaborate closely with ITS developers and subject matter experts to
establish the technical vision and analyse trade-offs between usability
and performance needs.
  • Collaborate closely with ITS developers to implement requirements and
provide necessary guidance to testers during QA process.
  • Collaborate in the planning, design, development, and deployment of
applications, and enhancements.
  • Identify and propose technical solutions to resolve application
integration problems.

Continuous • Review and analyse the effectiveness and efficiency of existing
Improvement applications developed for the Office of the Provost and develop

strategies for improving or further leveraging them.
  • Understand complex problems and develop practical solutions to them
Relationship/Strategic • On behalf of the Provost portfolio, be stakeholder manager with external
Engagement providers of data (TEC, Stats NZ, ITS, researchers, project managers, etc.).

Where required and in order to support the Provost portfolio, take a
leading role in managing data analytic projects with external partners
(such as benchmarking partners).

  • Work with business stakeholders to assess the effectiveness of
implemented changes (benefits realisation).
  • Interact directly with business users, development and support teams to
identify gaps and provide innovative solutions/workarounds in response
to business requirements.

qualified or has received adequate training or instruction.


Qualifications and Experience
Qualifications: • A tertiary qualification in information management, data analytics or

other related discipline is required.
  • Postgraduate qualification is preferred with a focus in human-
computer interaction.




Experience: • At least three years’ experience at a senior level preferably in a
medium or large organization.

  • Trained in advanced level data visualisation.
  • Understanding of the business environment in which the education
sector operates.
  • Experience working and managing large data sets.
  • Experience using advanced analytic and statistical tools and
techniques including but not limited to data mining, multivariate
analysis, forecasting, modelling and visualisation.
  • Knowledge and competence with data warehouses and building
analytic projects in Power BI, Tableau or other related tools.
  • Experience in collecting and managing data and information for
reporting and to provide a basis for effective analysis in support of
management decision making.
  • Experience with analysis of large and/or complex data.
