Salary range $71,659 – $87,582
We are looking for a motivated and experienced team player to join our Editorial Services team. This is your chance to work in the heart of central government and help make great law for New Zealand.
What we do
The Parliamentary Counsel Office (PCO) is New Zealand's law drafting and publication office, and the Government's legislative adviser. Its statutory objective is to promote high-quality legislation that is easy to find, use, and understand and, to that end, to exercise stewardship of New Zealand's legislation as a whole.
The team
Our Editorial Services team is part of our Access and Digital Services group, which provides free and ready access for users to up-to-date, high-quality legislation through the New Zealand Legislation website. The team provides a specialist editorial service to Parliamentary Counsel (legislative drafters) throughout the drafting process.
The role
Editors read and provide editorial suggestions for draft versions of Bills, Amendment Papers, and secondary legislation to ensure that the drafts follow style and formatting rules and are clear, accurate, and consistent. They also check that draft amendments fit correctly with the existing legislation being amended. Editors sometimes also edit non-legislative documents.
Our editors have the opportunity for career progression within the team.
About you
To be considered for the role of editor in our Editorial Services team, ideally you would have:

  • demonstrated ability to deliver editorial services, including by analysing language structures and format, and through fact-checking:
  • knowledge of editorial practices, standards, and systems:
  • excellent written English skills and a good grasp of grammar:
  • an appreciation of the principles of plain language:
  • the ability to consistently maintain a high standard of work under strict deadlines:
  • proven experience of working in a team as a positive, constructive, and contributing team player:
  • strong communication and relationship management skills:
  • commitment to building knowledge, skills, and abilities in te reo Māori me ngā tikanga:
  • commitment to learning and applying new skills, knowledge, and ways of working:
  • a tertiary qualification, or equivalent experience, in publishing or editing, or in another relevant field.
An understanding of legislation and legislative processes and concepts, the New Zealand political system, and parliamentary processes would be an advantage. If you do not have previous experience working with legislation, you must be able to quickly acquire knowledge and understanding to the level needed to carry out the editor role.
Our culture
Located across the road from Parliament, PCO offers you a fascinating insight into Aotearoa's legislation. We are a small office of around 120 people, with a passion for producing great legislation.
We value our people and provide a flexible and supportive environment.
We offer a range of resources to support your wellbeing such as 5 weeks' annual leave, access to fitness opportunities such as the Parliament gym, discounted health insurance, and annual vision and hearing test reimbursement, in-house te reo classes, and more.
How to apply
This is an excellent opportunity to join a professional and highly respected organisation.
For more information about working at the PCO, as well as the job description, please visit our careers page www.pco.govt.nz/careers-at-the-pco.
