Job specific information
The Education Support Worker (ESW) is responsible for providing practical support in an early childhood centre for an individual disabled child.Outcomes to be achieved from this support are:

The child participates in activities alongside their peers and engages in education and social opportunities within the early childhood centre.

The child is provided with inclusive natural play-based opportunities and activities which will enhance their development.

The child is positively supported in their transition from the early childhood centre environment to the primary school environment.

The Education Support Worker is a member of the child’s Early Intervention Team and as such contributes to and follows the child’s Individual Plan (IP).

The Education Support Worker undertakes appropriate training and development.

Provide support to a disabled child within an identified early childhood centre at times agreed during the school terms only. This may involve help and encouragement to undertake play and education activities. Support may also involve working with other children in the early childhood centre so centre staff can work with the individual child to foster wider relationships and learning.

At all times follow the early childhood centre policies and procedures and those of CCS Disability Canterbury West Coast.

Discuss current goals, progress and challenges with the Early Intervention Teacher during visits to the centre and supervision sessions.

Participate in and contribute to Individual Planning meetings and the development of the child’s Individual Plan (IP).

Follow the child’s Individual Plan and implement strategies for development of skills and areas of identified need.

Advise the other members of the child’s Early Intervention Team of any relevant changes, concerns, risks and achievements.

Act in a professional manner at all times and ensuring information about the child is shared with the relevant parties.

Participate in regular supervision with the Early Intervention Teacher.

Undertake training and development as required by CCS Disability Action.
It is expected that the incumbent will be able to demonstrate the following personal skills and attributes, and professional skills and knowledge.

Experience in a service delivery organisation.
-
Understanding of the disability sector and ability to relate to disabled people in a positive affirming manner.
-
Understanding of the development of children and the way in which they relate to others.
-
The ability to work effectively with disabled children, their family / whānau.
-
Be flexible and adaptable.
-
Display relationship and personal skills with a range of people and age groups.
-
Clean driver’s license or access to transport.
-
Have good written and verbal communication skills.
-
Can work positively as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
-
Has a willingness to learn and develop.
