Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role
Now is an exciting time to join Toitū Te Whenua Land Information New Zealand and be part of a key programme of work, 3D Coastal Mapping. Over the next three years the programme will map up to 40% of Aotearoa New Zealand's coastline to help the country prepare for the impacts of climate change and understand how our coastline is changing.
The data collected will be used to create detailed 3D maps of the coast and adjacent seafloor, providing a baseline from which we can measure changes to coastal areas and better understand the impacts of sea-level rise, storm surge and tsunami.
Mapping data will be collected using various techniques, including by planes fitted with high-resolution airborne Light Detection and Ranging (Li DAR) scanning equipment.
An exciting 3-year fixed term intermediate role in the Sea Squad is now available. In this role you will contribute to the planning and management of the 3DCM data capture, as well as undertake QC and validation of 3DCM data deliverables. You will also contribute to the work of the Sea Squad supporting the delivery of the annual national hydrographic survey programme critical to ensuring New Zealand meets its international obligations to maritime navigation safety.

You will be capable and comfortable with the following:
  • Liaising with outside organisations, authorities and contractors on technical matters, as well as responding to customer queries appropriately
  • Contributing to business processes, product and service improvement projects in collaboration with others
  • Assisting with ensuring data and products are able to be made discoverable and accessible to internal and external users
He pūkenga tou - Skills & Experience

  • Experience with government procurement processes. 
  • A tertiary qualification in a relevant geospatial discipline 
  • Proven experience in modern hydrographic survey systems and technology, including multi-beam echo sounders (and Li DAR would be an advantage)
  • Knowledge of international hydrographic standards and specifications would be an advantage
  • Knowledge of tidal theory and operations
  • Experience in managing, processing and visualising data
  • Awareness of emerging mapping technologies, processes and techniques used in processing, QC/QA and data products
  • Awareness of emerging hydrographic data standards
  • Experience with stakeholder engagement and collaboration. 
  • Experience with government procurement processes would be an advantage. 
Highly desirable:
  • Category ‘A' Hydrographic Surveyor (having successfully completed a FIG/IHO/ICA IBSC Category ‘A' Recognised Course) with relevant experience, and/or 
  • Accredited Level 1 Hydrographic Surveyor (AHSCP) with relevant experience
