Geospatial Specialist - Nautical Cartography and Hydrography

Wellington

FULL TIME

September 12, 2024

Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role
Now is an exhilarating time to be part of Toitū Te Whenua, Land Information New Zealand, as we embark on a significant transformational programme to develop truly data centric systems which support emerging international hydrographic standards and technologies. The work programme supports the International Hydrographic Organisation (IHO) ‘S-100 Implementation Decade' and will develop new processes and navigational products for the digital future.
You will contribute to the transformational work programme, whilst contributing to all established business-as-usual processes. You will continue to develop your geospatial analysis and nautical cartography skills as you contribute to the production and maintenance of NZ's navigational chart portfolios, this includes populating and maintaining source and production databases. You will also be intrinsically involved in the assessment of incoming maritime safety information and the promulgation of notices to mariners. You will work with a customer centric focus to ensure hydrographic products and services are fit for purpose today and for the future.
You will benefit from our unique structure where the chart squad works alongside topographic mapping, geodetic positioning, and data services squads. This structure, combined with the small size of the squad, provides excellent opportunities to be involved in a wide range of activities.

He pūkenga tou - Skills & Experience

  • Working experience and expertise regarding hydrographic source data and navigational safety products and services.
  • Experience of working to IHO S-57 and S-100 Standards and their implications for navigation, as well as further IHO Regulations, notably S-4, INT1 and INT2.
  • Having at least 3-5 years' experience working in a GIS database, preferably Teledyne Caris HPD or similar.
  • Demonstrated strong organisational skills, including the prioritising of deliverables, and maintaining effective working relationships with contractors.
  • Working to strict quality control processes.
  • Building and maintaining strong relationships internally and externally.
  • Experience of using or writing scripts for validating and querying databases.
  • Ability to contribute to business improvement initiatives.
  • IHO Cat B Nautical Cartography Qualifications highly advantageous and preferred, but not compulsory.
Depending on skills and experience the expected annual salary range for this role is: $82,000-$100,000

As an inclusive and supportive employer, we value difference and want to encourage anyone interested to apply, regardless of whether you tick all the boxes or not. As an organisation we embrace diversity, encourage work life balance, and have a flexible approach to the way we work which means you will feel connected and valued.
