Te āhuatunga a te tūranga | About the role

Based in Whakatāne and reporting to the Eastern Catchments Team Leader you’ll join a dedicated and hardworking team to:
  • Work with the community, landowners and Iwi on projects that support sustainable land management.
  • Protect, restore, and enhance a range of biodiversity sites across the Eastern Bay of Plenty.
  • Promote strategies that improve water quality and soil conservation.
  • Prepare contract specifications and project manage works.
  • Develop Environmental programmes with landowners/occupiers and tangata whenua.
  • Provide timely and accurate advice to the community and other stakeholders.
  • Support local community groups and volunteers to protect local eco systems important to them.
The role is not one that will have you stuck behind a desk all day as there’s plenty of field-based regional travel to provide you with variety and maximum job interest.
Ō pūmanawa | Your skills and experience
We’re ideally seeking individuals with a degree in science, natural resource management or agriculture, but if you consider your experience and engagement skills to be ‘awesome’ then we encourage you to ‘have a crack’.
Ideally you will have a biodiversity background and experience in ecosystem management however knowledge of farming practices and soil and water conservation are also attributes we look for in this position. Additional knowledge in earth science will be beneficial. In addition, you will have worked with rural communities, and have strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to negotiate win-win outcomes.
If you don’t quite have all these skills or experience, we would encourage you to still apply as you may be suitable for a Land Management Officer II role instead (training and development role).
Ko wai mātou | Who we are
Toi Moana Bay of Plenty Regional Council is responsible for land, air and water as well as public transport and economic development. A major focus of our work involves looking after the environment. We manage the effects of people's use of freshwater, land, air and coastal water. However, we also have a broader responsibility with others for the economic, social and cultural well-being of the regional community.
You’ll be joining the Coastal Catchments team. We work closely with farmers, tangata whenua, consultants and the wider community across the coastal catchments of the Bay of Plenty to progress a range of challenging but rewarding environmental projects. You can expect to be involved in a diverse range of work – covering biodiversity, water quality, soils, community engagement and land management.

The salary range for the Land Management I and Land Management II (training and development role) are listed below. Starting remuneration will depend on the skills and experience of the successful applicant.
  • Land Management Officer: $96,153.70 - $113,122.00
  • Land Management Officer II: $81,587.25 - $95,985.00
