Lecturer/ Senior Lecturer in Quantity Surveying – School of
Built Environment

Position Purpose: To enhance the learning and qualification outcomes of Massey University's
students and the scholarly outputs of the University by undertaking an
effective programme of teaching; undertaking research including research
supervision of students; engaging in the pursuit of external funding;
providing administrative and professional service to the University and
broader academic or professional communities, developing a programme
of co-curricular activities to enhance experiential learning.

About this area The School of Built Environment (SBE) at Massey University is one of the
schools in the College of Sciences and is fully based in Albany, Auckland
campus. The School offers programmes in Facilities Management, Lighting,
Construction Management, Quantity Surveying, Construction Project
Management, Quantity Surveying, Construction Law, Sustainable Built
Environment and Digital Built environment at different levels from
Diploma, Graduate Diploma, Bachelor, PG Certificate, PG Diploma, Master
and Ph D. The school is continuously experiencing exciting and rapid growth
and as a consequence is looking to recruit a new Lecturer in Quantity
Surveying to develop and teach relevant subjects in our programmes and
to reinforce our research capabilities.

Accountabilities
Research and
Enterprise • Develop an active, appropriate and viable personal research programme

and/or participate in team- based research in areas relevant to SBE and
its strategic vision;

  • Taking an active part in and contribute to at least one of the research
groups in the School;
  • Engage with industry to address their research needs as coordinated
through the School;
  • Publish papers or other scholarly works in appropriate academic journals
and review research papers;
  • Actively involved in the preparation of research funding proposals in
areas relevant to SBE and its strategic vision to generate research
funding;
  • Supervise the research activities of postgraduate and undergraduate
students and assist in the supervision of students/research projects at all
levels including at Ph D level;
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues in conducting research.
Teaching and
Supervision • Contribute to the curriculum innovation within the whole life cycle of Built Environment projects specialising in Quantity Surveying in close
relationship with other sub-disciplines in SBE;.

  • Undertake undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and coordination
of internal and distance/online as required. This may include block
mode/campus/regional courses on a different campus to where you are
normally situated and the use of the designated Learning Management
System;
  • Develop and teach major curriculum components of courses (mainly but
not necessarily limited to Quantity Surveying related courses such as
Measurement, Cost Management Construction Law and Contract and so
on), in collaboration with colleagues in the school/college/university;
  • Undertake continuing personal professional development activities
consistent with maintaining excellence in teaching and supervision;
  • Coordinate and administer the teaching of subjects, which includes
participating in the University's formal procedures of evaluating teaching
and course delivery;
  • Contribute to the development of a supportive environment for Built
Environment students and develop strategies for retention and
achievement of Built Environment programmes from diverse cultural
perspectives.
  • Work with the College’s and University’s health and safety staff to
develop and update documentation and signpost the various health and
safety training and procedures for staff and student’s procedures to
cover new equipment, techniques and changes in teaching.
Academic Citizenship
  • Supporting colleagues;
  • Participate in community service activities that further advance the
profession or field/discipline, which are consistent with the University's
Charter and Strategic Plan as well as College’s and SBE’s Strategic Plans;

  • Assist the School to develop an environment that gives positive effect to
the obligations of the Treaty of Waitangi;
  • Serve on University, Colleges and/or School’s Committees;
  • Any other relevant duties as required by the Head of the School of Built
Environment.

Qualifications and Experience
Qualifications • A degree in Quantity Surveying and a relevant Doctoral degree in
Quantity Surveying is required;

Essential • A current professional qualifications in or working towards
professional qualification in one or more Quantity Surveying
professional institute (e.g., RICS, NZIQS, ICES, AIQS) is required.

Experience • Recent, relevant teaching experience, within a university or other
Essential tertiary teaching environment is required;
  • A research publication record in reputable peer-reviewed academic
and/or professional journals, and/or books suitable for appointment atLecturer or Senior Lecturer level is required;
  • Experience of involvement in successfully securing competitive
external academic research or industry R&D funding up to successfulcompletion is required;
  • A proven record of research supervision, preferably at Postgraduate
level is required.


Desirable • Relevant industry experience relevant to Quantity Surveying or at least
a good degree of exposure in Quantity Surveying and involvement in

industry-based training is desirable.

Surveying related activities based on Standard Methods of Measurement,
Standardised Form of Contracts and other standards for both vertical and
horizontal infrastructure projects;

  • Sound knowledge about the construction sector in New Zealand as well as
internationally;
  • Demonstrated and well-developed network in New Zealand’s construction
