Job Description: Lecturer/Senior Lecturer
Position Purpose: The purpose of this position is to contribute to and enhance the learning

and qualifications outcomes of Massey University’s students and the
scholarly programme of teaching, research and publication in the area of
speech and language therapy, and to provide administrative and
professional service to the university and the broader academic,
professional and general communities.

About this area Te Kura o te Mātauranga, The Institute of Education, offers
graduate/postgraduate, peak body-accredited professional preparation
programmes in initial teacher education (with early childhood, primary
and secondary education specializations), counselling, educational
psychology and speech and language therapy.

Speech and Language Therapy at Massey University is the only distance
education programme of its kind in Aotearoa New Zealand, and one of
the few globally. The programme offers comprehensive training in
communication and swallowing disorders, blending theory with practical
experience. It emphasises cultural competence and safety, informed by
their Kaiakiaki Māori (advisor), preparing graduates for diverse clinical
and research roles both locally and internationally.

Accountabilities
Teaching • Undertake undergraduate and postgraduate teaching via all modes
of teaching and delivery mediums, including through electronic and
on-line technologies.

  • Design and develop the academic and administrative content of
courses and design the appropriate assessment criteria and
processes.
  • Coordinate and administer the teaching delivery and assessment of
all papers allocated from the University’s Integrated Paper
Programme (IPP).
  • Ensure that all teaching is research-informed and relevant, and that
course materials are regularly updated.
  • Participate in the peer review of teaching to enhance the quality of
course design and delivery.
  • Arrange for regular student evaluations of teaching for all
papers/courses for which paper-coordination responsibilities have
been assigned.
  • Be accessible to students by providing consultation time on course-
related matters.
  • Specific teaching expertise in child language/paediatric
communication
  • Engage in clinical tasks as required
Supervision • Contribute to the University degree completions and success by
supervising the research activities of undergraduate and
postgraduate students, including postgraduate research projects
and theses.


Research and • Undertake an active and appropriate programme of academic
Scholarship research, including participation in team-based research as

appropriate, to the level expected by the University’s Strategic
Research Capability Policy.

  • Publish books and papers and/or other scholarly works in academic
journals and other publications - including creative research
outputs if in the area of creative or expressive arts.
  • Review research papers and other scholarly publications.
  • Participate in and present research at academic conferences.
  • Contribute to School/Institute/University seminars and workshops
  • Seek research funding where there is an opportunity to do so
  • Submit recent publications data to Research Management Services
for entry onto the Research Information Management System
(RIMS)
  • Periodically enter updated ‘Peer Esteem’ and ‘Contributions to the
Research Environment’ information onto RIMS

Service

Service to the Community
  • Participate in community service activities that further advance the
profession or field and which are consistent with the University’s
charter and strategic goals.

  • Assist the School/Institute to develop and strengthen relationships
with professional and stakeholder communities as appropriate.
  • Contribute to the broader community and society through the
University’s obligations under the Education Act to fulfil “the role as
critic and conscience of society”.
  • Assist the School/Institute/University to develop an environment
which gives effect to the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi.University Responsibilities
  • Serve on University and/or School/Institute committees.
  • Observe University policy and codes of practice in all teaching,
research, community service and administrative practices.
  • Contribute to the development of a School/Institute environment
that values teamwork, cooperation and collegiality.
  • Contribute to the administration of the School/Institute.
  • Take responsibility for professional self-improvement and
development.
  • Undertake other duties as may be assigned.
Qualifications and Experience
Qualifications: • Relevant Ph D (or equivalent)
NB. Appointments made where the required qualification is close to
completion will require completion within a specified timeframe as a
condition of appointment.

Experience: • Demonstrated teaching and research experience in a university or
other tertiary teaching environment.

  • Experienced in the use of electronic and on-line technologies in
blended and distance teaching delivery
  • Experience in Speech and Language Therapy

Essential • Requirement to pass a Criminal and Traffic Convictions (Security)
Check performed by the Ministry of Justice.

• Requirement to pass a Qualifications Validation Check.
  • A safety check in accordance with the Vulnerable Children Act
2014 and the Vulnerable Children (Requirements for Safety
Checks of Children’s Workers) Regulations 2015 is required. Part
of this process includes a requirement to pass the police vetting
part of the safety check.
