Te Puni Kōkiri is the government's principal policy advisor on Māori wellbeing and development. We achieve strategic influence with a focus on providing high quality policy advice and holding other agencies to account for delivering public services to, for and with Māori. This includes our mandate to promote Māori achievement in education, training, health and economic resource development along with performing our monitoring and mentoring roles.
Based in our Ikaroa- Rāwhiti region in Gisborne, the Pou Whakahaere is the first point of contact for many in our communities and represents the Ikaroa- Rāwhiti offices, our Chief Executive and Minister to the wider community.
Te Whiwhinga Mahi | The opportunity
The Pou Whakahaere is responsible for providing cultural advice, support and safety to the Ministry and its staff. You will be an expert in Te Reo me ōna Tikanga Māori and will act as an important link between Te Puni Kōkiri and Whanau, Hapū, Iwi.
You will do this by:
  • Acting as a cultural advisor by leading the organisation in its understanding and respect for Tikanga & strengthening the cultural capability of kaimahi.
  • Contributing to building and strengthening relationships with whānau, hapū, iwi.
  • Contributing to regional work programmes including leading and providing policy advice across a range of project related issues significant to Māori and Government
  • Acting as an effective conduit for information both into and out of Māori communities to support Māori initiatives and help us develop policy.
  • Contributing to and support the Ministry's Māori language plan through strategic input and coaching and mentoring of other staff.
  • Contributing to regional work programmes as appropriate.
  • Providing tikanga support to the Chief Executive, the Minister for Māori Development and other Ministers, and Senior Officials visiting the rohe.
  • Creating and sustaining an environment in which Māori can succeed as Māori in the public service.
The appointment range for this role is between $77,753 and $97,160 per annum pro rata and salary is determined based on the successful candidate's skills and experience.

We are looking for a Pou Whakahaere who is dedicated to the region, is passionate about Māori wellbeing and development, is a strong relationship builder and, above all else is competent in their knowledge, skillset, and with what they do.
  • An expert in Te Reo me ōna Tikanga Māori.
  • Have extensive and influential networks throughout Māoridom & ability to work across multiple iwi
  • Driven to inspire the organisation to apply Māori concepts and frameworks to their work.
  • Have an in-depth understanding of the Treaty of Waitangi in both its historical and contemporary context.
  • Adaptable and agile
  • Experienced in establishing relationships with Māori groups and key local bodies
  • Can show examples of mentoring and coaching others, uplifting office capability in te reo and tikanga
  • A clean full motor vehicle driver's licence.
