Here at ITS (Information Technology Services) we are responsible for the provision, maintenance, and support of information and communication technologies and business systems within the University of Otago community.
We are one of the largest ICT operations in NZ, supporting 27,000 users, a big network across multiple campuses and a huge range of systems.
The role/Te mahi
As Senior Manager Security Operations you’ll lead the Cyber Ops Teams that is the frontline in protecting the University from cyber threats. You’ll manage threat prevention, detection and effective management of incidents and investigations.
As the team leader you’ll be responsible for managing the University’s operational cyber security capabilities. You’ll be responsible for making sure we use our cyber tools well, that we keep developing them and that we have the coverage and depth in capability that the University needs.
This role isn’t all about the technical! Central to being successful in this role is that you are someone with a growth mindset, who sees challenges as an opportunity to improve, who has an attitude of accountability and takes pride in their own and their team’s work. And importantly who has excellent interpersonal skills.
- Leadership of a technical team.
- Implement and maintain cyber security controls.
- Oversee preventive, detective, response, and resilience security capabilities and process.
- Collaborate with teams across IT and the University to integrate security practices.
- Be a champion for and trusted advisor on security best practice, cyber awareness and emerging capabilities.
- Provide regular reports on security trends, risks, opportunities, and improvements.
- A tertiary level qualification in Computer Science or equivalent.
- Significant experience in the computing industry, with experience in information security or cybersecurity.
- Experience with our tools.
- Core: Microsoft XDR, Microsoft Sentinel, Entra ID, Axiom and Burpsuite.
- Desirable: Phriendly Phishing, Palo Alto, Cloudflare, Microsoft Dynamics, Jira, Intune, JAMF, Oracle Identity Manager, Blue Cat, Digicert, Imperva.
- In-depth knowledge of security frameworks (we use NIST CSF 2.0, CIS v8, NZISM, and PSR).
- Experience in implementing and monitoring service performance KPIs and metrics.

This is a full-time (37.5 hours), permanent position, we have a strong preference that the role is located in Dunedin, however we will consider remote work.
