Software Engineer (Android Specialist)

Founded in 2013, Eight Development is a New Zealand company that designs, engineers, customises, and maintains user interfaces Io T solutions for large companies seeking a faultless interface with touchscreens, mobile devices, digital signage, or other emerging interface devices.
We are looking for two Software Engineers (Android Specialist) to join our industry-leading Team. The roles will be responsible for the planning design, development & implementation of software solutions as per the development roadmap. The Software Engineer needs to think outside of the box and work independently without direct supervision.
Main Tasks:
- Get hands-on with the code to develop high-quality software.
- Work across multiple projects to lead development and embed quality throughout the software development process.
- Analyse, design, coordinate, and supervise development to specification, and create work breakdowns to make sure the delivery is properly estimated.
- Maintain legacy code, improve its quality including refactoring the code and performing technology upgrades when necessary.
- Constantly improve the quality and maintainability of the implemented solution.
- Improve and contribute to product knowledge by documenting key design aspects in the company wiki.
- Ensure code that is committed to the repository is properly tested according to the best security practices.
- Implement appropriate unit and automated tests for development and bug fixes of new code and legacy code.
- Inform the management about any security or penetration-related vulnerabilities in the code. Work closely with the quality assurance team on raising and solving bug reports in the most effective manner possible
- Provide guidance on non-functional design elements including security, scalability and performance, monitoring, analytics, documentation, and quality.
- Provide technical coaching and mentoring to less experienced engineering team members.
- Actively participate in the agile process, including daily stand-up meetings and development sprints. Ensure the JIRA board is kept up to date and managed in accordance with company guidelines.
Mandatory Skills and Experience:
- You must have a minimum of 5 years of commercial experience with Java (legacy applications), Kotlin, Hilt/Dagger, Data binding, Kotlin Coroutins, REST + Retrofit, Eventbus, Android services, MVVM, and MVI patterns.
- Recent commercial experience in native Android development with Kotlin (preferably) or Java.
- Demonstrated proficient understanding of concurrency.
- Competent in working with threads and managing background processes.
- A strong familiarity with Android OS, Android views, and the ability to construct efficient adaptive layouts is highly desirable.
