Summer Assistant Vacancy - Kiwi Reserves (Fixed term, Part-time - 12 weeks)

Our Coastal Catchments team leads work on a multiple partnership projects protecting our iconic kiwi by controlling pest animals and plants from our reserves and we need your help!
The work that you do will complement the work of contractors and the Kiwi Trust Volunteers. The Whakatāne Reserves project covers Mokoroa, Kōhī Point and Ōhope scenic reserve (1000ha) as well as private neighbouring land. The project looks to support and enhance our local kiwi population and native flora and fauna. The trap network consists of 2100 bait stations, 800 traps and over 100km of networks.
Tasks would include:
- Inspect and maintain the bait station network.
- Conduct monitoring recording pest plants and animals.
- Help enhance visitor and user experiences.
You’ll be joining the Coastal Catchments team who work with landowners, trustees and community groups to support the protection and enhancement of our local biodiversity and improving water quality.
Ngā Pūkenga, ngā wheako - Your Skills & Experience:
- Proven experience working remotely within native forest.
- A high level of navigation and GPS skills.
- Understanding of current pest animal and monitoring techniques.
- Ability to follow directions and work unsupervised/alone.
- Study or have studied New Zealand conservation or similar.
- Experience undertaking animal pest control for conservation.
- Hold a current driver's licence.
This is a part time, 20 hour per week, fixed term position located in Whakatāne.
