Work is performed under the general guidance and leadership of the Director of Public Works. This is a highly skilled mechanical work in repair and maintenance of gasoline and diesel-powered construction and related Public Works and other City equipment and vehicles. This position requires high level technical skills including troubleshooting, analytical knowledge and strong mechanical knowledge of tools, equipment, technics and research. This position is designated as an emergency essential position that requires performance of emergency duties and actions to prepare, repair and recover the City before, during and after any adverse storm events (hurricane, tornado, tropical storm, winter storm, severe thunderstorm, flash flooding etc.) or other conditions (natural or manmade).ESSENTIAL DUTIESTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position.Repairs, overhauls, and rebuilds a variety of construction and maintenance equipment. Repairs and performs maintenance on trash trucks, garbage trucks, trailers, fire trucks, police cars, small engines, pumps, mowers, etc.Overhauls and services assemblies, sub-assemblies and accessories, such as single and two speed rear axles, multi-speed transmissions, hydraulic systems, compressed air, vacuum and electric controls, systems and components.Repairs and overhauls trucks, tractors, air compressors and other heavily engineered equipment.Performs tests to locate defects in operation and as a review on repairs before returning equipment to service.Repair and/or replace tires.Identifies, research and orders required parts.Research issues and problems to determine solutions and resolution of issues.Mentor and share knowledge with other mechanics in a constructive and team focused manner.Maintain strong records of repairs and maintenance of equipment.Communicates effectively and in a cooperative manner with internal customers and fellow mechanics.Maintains safe and clean work areas on an ongoing basis.Follows standard safety practices as acceptable within the automotive industry.Performs other duties as required.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIESKnowledge of construction, design, repair and adjustment of gasoline and diesel engines and of the common types of construction and automotive equipment. Knowledge of tools and equipment needed for repairs of gas driven motors and diesel-powered construction equipment, to include handheld scan tools.Knowledge of hydraulic systems, especially those employed in diesel powered construction equipment. Knowledge of both light and heavy-duty electrical systems regarding their role in the proper functioning of engineering equipment. Knowledge of the principles of operation of diesel fueled and gasoline internal combustion engines.Ability to diagnose defects and failures of gasoline, diesel and compressed natural gas-powered equipment.Ability to perform metal fabrication, welding and painting Able and willing to provide own tools. Ability to work under adverse conditions, (heat, cold, inclement weather) and be able to perform manual type labor. Possess physical strength and agility sufficient to work out of doors under variable weather conditions.Ability to develop and maintain cooperative, courteous and effective working relationships with other departments, fellow team members, vendors, contractors and the general public.General knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary in the work assigned.Ability to understand and transmit verbal, written and digital instructions.Ability and desire to comply within all City safety policies and programs in the performance of their work to include, but not limited to, vehicles, equipment, tools, and facilities.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.Valid Driver’s License.Possess and maintain a minimum Florida Class B CDL License, with air brake endorsement, or ability to obtain within six (6).Minimum or one (1) year experience with electrical and telecommunications equipment.A comparable amount of training or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.PHYSICAL DEMANDSThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
