The Internal Reporter supports the ICRC’s governance and management with weekly information on operational and diplomatic developments, global legal policy initiatives, and decisions taken by the Directorate, Assembly Council and Assembly.
Accountabilities and responsibilities
- Write, compile, edit and proofread articles for the BI, using internal reporting tools and information from internal sources (see below), with minimal or no guidance
- Stay on top of and search for all relevant information (contextual, operational and diplomatic developments) concerning one or two of the five operational regions (Africa, Americas, Asia and the Pacific, Europe and Central Asia, Near and Middle East), to which Internal
- Reporters are assigned for one year: operational activities and major changes/challenges/achievements, global legal and policy initiatives, as well as decisions taken by the Directorate, Assembly Council and Assembly in order to identify the most relevant information to record and publish in the Internal Bulletin
- Replace and/or assist the Head of Unit in training and other tasks, when needed
- Accomplish any other tasks necessary for the BI’s publication and evolution
- Compared to Internal Reporting Officer 1, the Internal Reporting Officer 2 has more experience and can thus cover more complex contexts and sudden crises. The Internal Reporting Officer 2 needs less supervision/coaching from the team leader and can work in an autonomous way.
- The internal reporting officer may also fulfil the responsibilities of a focal point, acting as an intermediary between the head of the unit based in Geneva (Deputy Secretary of the Assembly) and the rest of the team as well as MSSC colleagues for all logistic and other issues that are better managed in proximity and not from Geneva.
- Follows up on all work-related messages and correspondence with the relevant contacts and departments
- Is aware of the delegation’s objectives and has a good knowledge of the Movement and other contacts relevant to the position
- Collects and shares information so as to improve the ICRC’s understanding of the environment and humanitarian trends and responses
- Represents the ICRC in an appropriate way during activities, in meetings and in the field, and avoids any activity that may reflect negatively on the ICRC’s image
- Takes responsibility for their own professional learning and development
Selection requirements
- Bachelor’s degree, preferably in journalism, political science, social sciences, international relations/studies, communication, languages/linguistics, or the humanities or equivalent;
- Excellent English and communication skills; mastery of grammar and proficiency in writing;
- Solid research and analytical skills, capacity to synthesize large amounts of information, and keen attention to detail;
- 1-6 years’ professional experience in writing and research is desirable, as is prior experience in reporting; candidates with less experience, including fresh graduates, are also welcome to apply, as are more experienced candidates;
- Good knowledge of the ICRC (operations, legal framework and functioning) is an advantage;
- Working knowledge of French and Spanish is an asset;
- Good knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel features.
