Breaking News Editor, Seoul

Job Description
The Washington Post seeks an agile, collaborative, multitalented editor to join our breaking news team in Seoul, which plays a critical role in The Post’s round-the-clock operations. A primary focus will be covering live news as it unfolds in the United States and around the globe during daytime hours in Seoul – overnight in Washington, D.C.
This is an important job, editing high-performing reporters whose work must be integrated seamlessly with The Post’s breaking news operations around the globe and across the newsroom.
Responsibilities:
  • Edit breaking news coverage during the hub’s designated turn each day, regularly running point for global news decisions within our 24-hour workflow.
  • Exercise consistently excellent news judgement and story selection instincts in a high-pressure, deadline-driven environment.
  • Shape coverage with audience needs in mind, including headlines, SEO, visual presentation and format.
  • Help coordinate seamless handoffs between Seoul, London and D.C.-based teams.
  • Ensure coverage coming out of Seoul consistently meets The Post’s high standards.
Preferred qualifications:
  • At least five years of professional experience shaping news coverage at a digital pace for an English-language publication.
  • A clear grasp of major storylines in the United States and across the Asia-Pacific region.
  • Strong story radar, sound news judgment, digital savvy and the ability to lead with urgency, clarity and empathy.
  • Prior experience with analytics, social media and digital content distribution tactics.
  • A collaborative, entrepreneurial spirit.
  • A commitment to employing storytelling formats that use graphics and other visual elements – plus video and audio – to make complex issues accessible to a broad audience.
This position will be based in Seoul and staffed through TWP South Korea LLC in South Korea, subject to local legal requirements. Some weekend shifts will be required.
