About BSC

The Barcelona Supercomputing Center - Centro Nacional de Supercomputación (BSC-CNS) is the leading supercomputing center in Spain. It houses Mare Nostrum, one of the most powerful supercomputers in Europe, was a founding and hosting member of the former European HPC infrastructure PRACE (Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe), and is now hosting entity for Euro HPC JU, the Joint Undertaking that leads large-scale investments and HPC provision in Europe. The mission of BSC is to research, develop and manage information technologies in order to facilitate scientific progress. BSC combines HPC service provision and R&D into both computer and computational science (life, earth and engineering sciences) under one roof, and currently has over 1000 staff from 60 countries.

If you consider that you do not meet all the requirements, we encourage you to continue applying for the job offer. We value diversity of experiences and skills, and you could bring unique perspectives to our team.

Context And Mission

The Earth Sciences Department of Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC-ES) led by Prof Francisco Doblas-Reyes performs global climate simulations with a variety of climate models. These simulations are analysed by the department researchers along with a comprehensive database of climate simulations performed by the rest of the community and compared to a vast set of observational references. The Mediterranean region is one of the target areas for these analyses and the department aims at increasing the emphasis put on understanding the past and future climate changes in the area.

We look for a postdoc researcher with interest in understanding and predicting the climate variability and change in, and formulating climate projections for the Western Mediterranean region. The candidate will use the wealth of existing data hosted at the BSC and output from new experiments performed in the context of several climate modelling projects and contracts. Special emphasis will be put on addressing scientific questions raised by different groups in the department, especially those working on climate impacts and services. The person is expected to explore the opportunities offered by emerging machine learning-based methods to complement existing approaches. The person will be encouraged to explore funding opportunities, co-supervision of younger scientists, participation in international scientific committees, and all the activities that can support an early-career scientist professional development.

The funding for these actions/fellowships and contracts comes from the European Union Recovery and Resilience Facility - Next Generation, within the framework of the General Invitation by the public business entity Red.es to participate in the talent attraction and retention programs within Investment 4 of Component 19 of the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan.

  • Explore the opportunities that machine learning-based approaches offer to understand the Western Mediterranean climate and formulate more robust climate information.
  • Employ multi-model simulations to test the robustness of the conclusions reached.
  • Explore, along with the supervisors and the project management support, sources of funding for research in the topics mentioned in the vacancy.
  • Publish the results in relevant scientific journals.
