We look for a postdoc researcher with interest in understanding and predicting the climate variability and change in, and formulating climate projections for the Western Mediterranean region. The candidate will use the wealth of existing data hosted at the BSC and output from new experiments performed in the context of several climate modelling projects and contracts. Special emphasis will be put on addressing scientific questions raised by different groups in the department, especially those working on climate impacts and services. The person is expected to explore the opportunities offered by emerging machine learning-based methods to complement existing approaches. The person will be encouraged to explore funding opportunities, co-supervision of younger scientists, participation in international scientific committees, and all the activities that can support an early-career scientist professional development.
The funding for these actions/fellowships and contracts comes from the European Union Recovery and Resilience Facility - Next Generation, within the framework of the General Invitation by the public business entity Red.es to participate in the talent attraction and retention programs within Investment 4 of Component 19 of the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan.

- Analyse numerical simulations and observational references to better understand and predict the Western Mediterranean climate, including a study of the main sources of predictability, and its seasonal, interannual, and decadal variability.
- Analyse existing and future climate simulations through a process-based perspective to identify and diagnose key model errors that limit the quality of climate information.
- Explore the opportunities that machine learning-based approaches offer to understand the Western Mediterranean climate and formulate more robust climate information.
- Employ multi-model simulations to test the robustness of the conclusions reached.
- Explore, along with the supervisors and the project management support, sources of funding for research in the topics mentioned in the vacancy.
- Publish the results in relevant scientific journals.

Education
- Ph D in atmospheric, ocean or climate sciences, applied mathematics, computer sciences or any related discipline.

Essential Knowledge and Professional Experience
- Experience in working with climate model output (including land, ocean, and atmospheric variables).
- Experience in climate predictability, prediction, and global climate simulation.
- Understanding of the processes associated with the Western Mediterranean climate.

Additional Knowledge and Professional Experience
- Experience with version control systems (e.g., SVN or Git) will be valued.
- Experience in using HPC architectures and coding with scripting languages will be valued.
- Theoretical understanding of climate dynamics will be valued.

Competences
- Fluency in English.
- Ability to take initiatives, prioritise tasks and work under set deadlines.
- Ability to work both independently but still as part of a highly-coordinated team.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- The position will be located at BSC within the Earth Sciences Department
- We offer a full-time contract (37.5h/week), a good working environment, a highly stimulating environment with state-of-the-art infrastructure, flexible working hours, extensive training plan, restaurant tickets, private health insurance
- Duration: 4 years
- Holidays: 23 paid vacation days plus 24th and 31st of December per our collective agreement
- Salary: 45.000,00
- Additional Expenses Grant: Each fellowship will be associated with a grant for additional expenses, such as IT equipment, travel, training, stays, etc.
- Starting date: asap - the incorporation for this vacancy must be before the 16th of December 2024

Development of the recruitment process
The selection will be carried out through a competitive examination system ("Concurso-Oposición"). The recruitment process consists of two phases:
- Curriculum Analysis: Evaluation of previous experience and/or scientific history, degree, training, and other professional information relevant to the position. - 40 points
- Interview phase: The highest-rated candidates at the curriculum level will be invited to the interview phase, conducted by the corresponding department and Human Resources. In this phase, technical competencies, knowledge, skills, and professional experience related to the position, as well as the required personal competencies, will be evaluated. - 60 points. A minimum of 30 points out of 60 must be obtained to be eligible for the position.
In accordance with OTM-R principles, a gender-balanced recruitment panel is formed for each vacancy at the beginning of the process. After reviewing the content of the applications, the panel will begin the interviews, with at least one technical and one administrative interview. At a minimum, a personality questionnaire as well as a technical exercise will be conducted during the process.
The panel will make a final decision, and all individuals who participated in the interview phase will receive feedback with details on the acceptance or rejection of their profile.
