Customer Engineer
Career Grade: Team Member
Closing Date: 3rd September
Why this role matters
Our purpose is to use the power of communication to make a better world. For each other, for our customers, for society and our communities.
In a world where Business customers’ expectations are increasingly shaped by their consumer experiences, customer experience is becoming a key battleground for differentiation. In addition customers are turning to innovative solutions often bringing together multiple communication capabilities into a single solution.
As our Customer Engineer your role will be to make any technical aspects of the solution invisible to our customers and ensure that their services work for them allowing them to continue to deliver for their customers across the UK. You will be a key part of how we (BT) differentiates from the competition through your personal and brilliant customer experience.
What I'll be doing
Your primary focus as our Customer Engineer will be to maintain our BT Street assets including Payphones and our cabinets in the street within a dedicated geographical area including repairing payphone faults, changing glass panels, conducting Residual Conductance checks(RCD), cleaning, and general maintenance of the kiosk, whilst also responding to reported faults across our portfolio. We always welcome fresh solutions and creative minds so if you see something we could do better than share it and we’ll work on getting something in place to improve the way we operate.
This role could see you working within HM Prisons so the relevant security clearances will need to be applied for, awarded, and retained.
Let’s breakdown what your day to day activities will look like
- As mentioned earlier your primary focus will be to maintain our BT Street assets, primarily Payphones in a geographical area including repairing payphone faults, changing glass panels, conducting RCD checks and maintenance and cleaning of the kiosk.
- Once security cleared you’ll work in HM Prisons and other external secure areas maintaining our payphone estate.
- There will be times when you’ll have the need to operate electrical grinders and therefore wear appropriate PPE (facemasks or hoods) to keep you protected.
- When you join us we’ll invest time and training to you to attain the 18th edition qualification to carry out instructed electrical work upgrading our payphone estate to All IP. (Don’t worry this is not a qualified electrician role so you won’t need to have Electrical certification)
- You’ll install, set up, optimise and repair Mobile telecommunications networks for our Mobile customers. By repair we mean simple remedies for example restarting a router or changing user settings. We will give you training on elements of technical repair and configuration likely to be either pre or remotely configured customer mobile product sets, e.g. Ericsson/Nokia
- We’ll see you conducting simple structured cabling e.g. running additional extensions within street furniture, moving cables, and fitting customer kit.
A lot of the work above will be directly customer facing so we are looking for customer centricity at the heart of everything you do. Someone engaging, considerate of customers need and a customer service driven approach will be ideal as our Customer Engineer.
Your role could expand a little further to include the following
- Install, set up, optimise and repair (where repair indicates simple remedy e.g. restarting hubs or changing user settings, restart business hubs, pre-configured routers and switches or set them up to be remotely configured.
- Conduct simple Wi-Fi and mobile signal surveys, recommending installation locations and install access points.
- Provide deskside support to users of BT-supported laptop’s, PCs and printers to do hardware break fix support and occasional planned/scheduled rollouts, migrations or set ups.
- Conduct simple structured cabling e.g. running additional extensions from the switch or moving extensions and Network Terminating Equipment (NTE).
- Set up BT Apps and services for the customer on their devices – complete actions that are readily available for customer set up.
- Give the customer brief tutorials on their BT services to make sure they are getting the best from us.
- Listen to any service issues the customer may be experiencing and ensure the right service teams are dealing with them appropriately if it’s not something you can fix on site.
- Make recommendations on our other products and services that could improve the customers’ business.
The skills and experience you will need
- Brilliant customer service skills and experience in dealing with Business customers
- Great empathy and listening skills Great Conversations with our customers
- Previous experience of logical problem solving
- An interest in delivering technical solutions
- Previous engineering experience desirable but not essential
