Are you good with your hands? Are you able to fix things, build things as needed, and have the skills of a plumber, repairman, and carpenter? If so, then this job is calling your name! Come join the elite team of men and women who work in the Engineering department at Virgin Hotels! They ensure that everything in the hotel from the guest rooms, meeting rooms, restaurants, offices, is in good working order for our guests, clients, vendors and teammates.
In addition, and under the general supervision of the Assistant Director of Engineering, you will assist in the maintenance, repair, refurbishment, renovation, remodelling and general upkeep in order to keep the facility functional and attractive to prospective customers. Training will be provided on electrical safety, legionella awareness, PAT test, tower assembly, etc.
We expect you to communicate, coordinate and work well with other teammates, managers and guests. Most of all, we want you to have FUN since you will play a huge role in creating that memorable guest experience!
The Nitty-Gritty:
What exactly you will be doing…

Complete assigned work orders for general repair within assigned time frames in order to achieve the utmost
operational efficiency of the hotel, its safety and its equipment. - Perform systematic checks and inspections to aid in the upkeep of the hotel and assist in the established proactive maintenance program in order to prevent malfunctions, breakdowns and general depreciation.
- Immediately and courteously respond to guest’s needs in order to repair and/or resolve room maintenance requests and problems as they arise.
- Maintain tools, work spaces and equipment in safe, secure and good condition in order to reduce accidents and to prolong their use
- Repair, reprogramme and/or change room locks and safes.
- Adjusts and repair electronic problems on hotel equipment, including televisions, HVAC control units, VDA system etc.
- Assist department in maintaining safety equipment and emergency procedures for the safety of all guests and teammates
- Carry out and electronically record full room and public areas PPM’s.
- Assist with testing and controlling all aspects of health and safety; fire safety, fire tests, shower descaling and disinfecting, sprinkler pumps tests, safety walks, PAT testing.
- Carry out day to day plumbing, joinery and other maintenance task safely and in a timely manner
- Computer system knowledge to complete orders that are in a tracking system like ALICE or HMS
- Maintain a friendly, cheerful and courteous manner at all times
- All other duties as assigned, requested or deemed necessary by management
What qualities are we looking for?
You got skills? If you are able to perform the following, then you have come to the right place…

Working knowledge in the following areas:
general plumbing, refrigeration, air conditioning, electrical systems, boilers, bathroom fixtures, tiling, painting, prep to finish basic carpentry, basic electrical troubleshooting and repairing, grounds keeping, etc. - Vision to read written communication, LED read-outs, meters, and computer screens
- Painting and decorating knowledge
- Able to work on your own initiative to a high standard, keeping busy at all times.
- Good understanding of locks and safes, repairing and reprogramming, plus other IT related systems and apps.
- Ability to understand and follow verbal/written instructions, communicate both verbally and in writing, utilise analytical thought processes, understand verbal/written technical and mechanical instruction, and be highly organised.
- Ability to communicate effectively, courteously and proactively with employees, guests and contractors in writing, via telephone and in person.
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the job (standing for long periods of time, lifting heavy loads of up to 40 pounds unaided etc.)
- Ability to work 5 days a week on site at the Edinburgh Hotel, shifts are scheduled between 8am and 7pm
Background must-have:
- Current, legal and unrestricted ability to work in the United Kingdom
- Previous experience working in a hotel engineering or maintenance role
- Ability to compute accurate mathematical calculations.
- Ability to clearly and pleasantly communicate in English with guests, management/co-workers, both in person and on the telephone and through email.
