Departmental Overview

Cal Performances presents and produces outstanding artists from the Bay Area, the United States, and around the world in performances and community programs that promote excellence, innovation, diversity, education, and community involvement, with the fundamental belief that the arts are vital to our society locally, nationally, and internationally. Berkeley/Oakland Ailey Camp at Cal Performances is a program of the Department of Education, Campus and Community Programs. Cal Performances supports Ailey Camp with an array of professional performing arts services, including but not limited to marketing, public relations, facilities including Zellerbach Auditorium, and a full professional technical staff.

Ailey Camp is a nationally proven arts education program that uses dance as a vehicle for developing self-esteem, creative expression, and critical thinking skills among 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students (aged 11-14) who are at risk of dropping out of school. Ailey Camp also provides exceptional dance training to middle school students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. The project was inspired by the work of the late Alvin Ailey, internationally renowned dance artist, choreographer, and founder of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre.

The Director of Ailey Camp directs and promotes a tuition-free, six-week summer camp for at-risk youth with a focus on joyful and rigorous dance practice and social-emotional learning. As an experienced arts educator and professional dancer, the Director is responsible for the overall artistic content and works closely with the Associate Director on the day-to-day operations of Ailey Camp. The Director provides leadership in the areas of recruitment, artistic and curricular content, performance, staff training and supervision, administration, and community outreach, and participates in fundraising efforts and communications advancement.
