Job Summary

This position exists to assist project staff with sites in the Superfund Remedial and Superfund Site Assessment Programs. This includes assisting with environmental investigations where cleanup actions or building mitigation are needed. In cases that progress beyond the investigation stage, this position assists in managing the selection of specific environmental cleanup or building actions and, ultimately, the completion of the needed additional work such that public health and environmental risks are mitigated.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
This posting is being used to fill two vacancies.

Environmental Specialist 1
Two years of environmental protection experience OR
A Bachelor's degree in environmental protection or related science field. (Students in their final semester of college should apply for the position and can start after their graduation date.)
Environmental Specialist 2
Three years of environmental protection experience OR
A Bachelor's degree in environmental protection or related science field AND one year of professional environmental protection experience. (Students in their final semester of college should apply for the position and can start after their graduation date.)

Both:
Ability to manage multiple projects.
Ability to gain understanding of the environmental regulator process and state and federal rules.
Basic computer skills with proficiency in Word and exposure to Excel and Power Point.
Good communication and human relations skills to interact effectively with stakeholders and team members.

Preferred Qualifications
Ability to understand complex industry processes and rules/regulations.
Work effectively with people representing a broad spectrum of positions in business, government, and environmental groups.
Effectively represent the MPCA before a variety of groups relative to social, economic, and environmental issues.
Students who have participated in one the state or agency’s student leadership pipeline programs such as Right Track, Step Up, Urban Scholar, Star of the North or Increasing Diversity in Environmental Careers are encouraged to apply.
Physical Requirements
Requires occasionally lifting and/or carrying such articles as file folders, ledgers, and small equipment. Although a sedentary job is defined as one which involves sitting, a certain amount of walking and standing is often necessary in carrying out job duties.
Additional Requirements
Position duties may require travel but driving is not a minimum qualification or essential function of this position. Employees who may drive for state business will need their driver’s license checked prior to operating a state vehicle.
